1976 sportster question (oil line)

This may appear to be a really dumb question, however, on my 76 sporty...is the hard line (about 3/8") connected to the "cam cover" at the backside of the generator simply a vent tube? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is a vent but not "simply" a vent. It provides necessary crankcase ventilation.

Yeah, designed to let the inside of the motor breath. You will notice, that it blows and sucks. That is the pressure difference between top dead center and different positions of the pistons.
