Default HD 45" / matchless engine project

not long ago i saw a hybrid engine build by the well known dutch race freak cees fick
he was known for his strange "homebrew" engines made from mostly british parts and at some point even HD parts combined with brittish 4 speed trannys

he was a bid like burt munro some people say ...
except he did the streetcircuit races instead of the saltlakes

well to come back to the engine
it was put up for sale by a small HD shop up north ,but i had all my money invested in other mothercycle projects ...so i had to lett go

i phoned my mate andy from flying choppers in finland ,and he had the cash ,but he was traveling across europe from show to show with his bikes
and saw no way to send me the cash to get it for him

well that sucked for the both of us

checked the site (like craigslist) again ...and the engine was gone ...
i thought F#CK now some asshole got it and prob. gonna fuck it up or sell it for lots more to another rich yuppie or whatever

this engine was made by a (normal) enthousiastic dutch guy and needed to stay in our circle ....where this history of the build will be remembered and aprieciated

about 3 weeks later the engine was on the internet again for sale for even less at the same HD shop as before ....so that was great
imidiatly a friend of mine called me and asked me if i knew anything about this engine and that he wanted to buy it
whe phoned the shop and a vieuw days later we went of to the north of holland to pick it up

the engine was even more complete than whe tought
it came with the gearbox, carbs ,exhaust ,home made belt drive kit etc ..

i prommissed my buddy that i would look at it ,because cees fick had build a few of these engines ...but the first 4 had some compression ,oilpressure and ignition issues
and whe didn't when this engine was made ,and if it would run correctly

so i took of the rear cilinder ,head and piston and that all looked fine
and whe decided to completely rebuild the engine just to make sure and renew it all

glad whe did !!

the cranckcase bearings were shimmed on the wrong side ,clearing issues in the bearings and some other minor and big misstakes where made ..so that was a bit of a sadback
but nothing that couldn't be fixed

i completely rebuilt the "normal" bottem end of this 45" WL engine
some pics :

forgot to take pics when the cases were split

That's pretty cool - what can you tell us about the mods needed to make it work? What cam profiles does it use, did the barrels fit right up, how are you going to route the front intake/ rear exhaust? Is it stroked?
More, more, more please.

.Does the frame have wings ? That engine looks like it belongs in a plane. Very nice.

Very cool. I remember seeing pictures of one of Cees Fick's bikes in one of the British motorcycle newspapers back in the early 70s. It was an engine just like this one, in a Norton featherbed frame, done cafe racer style from what I remember. It is great that his workmanship in the engine has been restored.
Would be nice to see a whole bike as he built it. IT was quite a radical thing in its day.

Hey Philip. So cool you finally got it. I can't wait to see what you build around this. Was Cees Fick anything to do with the PB Club up in Friesland? I know some of those guys.

Cheers Johnny

very nice; are the heads ali' or just painted, and the displacement 700cc / 1000cc ?

It will be goodto see how you deal with the inlet and exhaust manifolds.

hey johnny

wel it isn't mine ,but now that iv'e done it
i decided to go to another friend of mine who's working at a motorcycle shop/scrapyard since the '20's
and bought 8 of these aluminium heads complete with cilinders and pistons

after this one a buddy of mine (you know him) willem from the zijkleppaleis and me will build 4 more of these engines

what we know now after building this ....the others will be a piece of cake

we did more than necessary : al new bronze bushings ,bearings etc
we needed to re-think the cam positioning because the engine has two "front" cylinders
the pushrods are custom ,the valve timing is a custom set up
we had some work on the heads for the compression

but when i build another one ,i'll show u guys the exact changes that needs to be done >with pics

yes : cees finck used to put these engines into the norton featherbed frames

700 cc
two matchless G3 cylinders
and the heads are ali'

the cylinders are steel and painted ,and cees or someone else welded a new "base" underneat the matchless cylinders ...it looks bad ...as you can see in the pics
but i left it for now
the 4 "repops" i'm gonna build will be much nicer

i wonder if it would be possible to use g80cs cyls and heads ? that would bring it up to 1200cc .
i had a cherry little g80 back in the 70s. i chopped it

hey bill
i already looked into that ,but the cases can't have the G80 cylinders
not enaugh flesh
and i still want the "base" to look stock

but i'm pretty sure after these four ,there will be more hybrid engines comming out of my shop
it won't stop here with this conversion
the plans are to build a OHV openvalve engine with a set of WL cases too
