Default foot or hand shafter drum

Converting my 52 Pan to a jockey side shift, really don't want to pay for a hand shift drum and have a hand cover. So was wondering if the foot drum would work without the ratchet top.

a hand drum would be difficult to use as the throw is very short

most use a ratchet selector with a FX drum as its to the rear to up shift and yes the FX is the one every one wants and it has become expensive, as in 3 to 1 in the cost of an FL drum

thanks for the reply, but I think I need to be clearer, I would like to put a 54 FLH foot shift drum , in a hand shifter lid. I'm thinking it will work, but might be hard to find neutral.

Are you using a tank gate or just hand shift?

You can file or grind the neutral detent groove deeper on the drum cam.

jockey side shift, back in the day I could find neutral between each gear, when the bitch would move at a stop light, but not sure with the foot cam, never though about the filing , thanks for the reply.

That is the reason I brought up the filing, as that is another trick to file in the false neutrals in a tank top shifter drum. Aaaaaaa am I dating myself?

Couple of hints on riding a hand shift.

When you need to turn left from a stop, do it don't f around.

When you come to a stop, as you roll the last few inches turn the front end to the left slightly. You will always land on your right foot.

If you are a rear brake only rider use the above and get real fast at moving your right foot from the brake or find neutral.

Just use the bumper of the car behind you to rest up until its time to pull away.

If not a long bike and no front brake turn sideways on the hill, I used to try to always do the turn to the left. I figured out it was way easier to run a front brake.
