I want to commend Teach as well for the effort he puts into his classes. I saw an interview a few weeks ago with John Ratzenberger, (Cliff Clavin from Cheers) and he said that the biggest complaint he's heard from industry leaders is the severe lack of "hands-on tool skills" with new hires. American kids aren't routinely taught the basics of using tools and working with your hands anymore. He has that show, "Made in America" and this is where it comes from. One hope is that he did say that he is sponsoring a summit later this year trying to get industry leaders together with educators and politicians in an effort to raise awareness of this important lack of capability in our workforce. Sounds like Teach already has one-upped him by making a difference one shop class at a time.

I started doing bikes as an after school club back in 2003. When I would ride to school on my old ironhead which I've had since 1990 a bunch of kids would come around after school to hear it run. Most of these kids I did not have in class so I started the club to give them something to do that was fun for them. We tore down the ironhed the first winter, then the following year I bought my 57 pan basket we did that one, the horse ran a feature on it and it grew into a donation build after that which is sold to support the class and keep all the metal manufacturing courses going as budget cuts were forcing us to drop these classes. As most know I post a ton about it (you have to to keep it going) and travel all over the country promoting what I do. It has gotten to where most know me now so it is a bit easier to find sponsors, the first few years was the hardest building credibility and showing that we would follow through on the builds and get the sponsors recognition as well as seeing their parts on something the kids created.

Those kids are blessed. My HS shop teacher was more concerned with female students and the advent of internet porn than he was teaching anything...He ruined the shop program at that school....well, we kinda ruined it because his lack of supervision gave way to all kinds of teenage shenanigans that ultimately ended up causing major program cuts...and loss of shop space and tools. He was eventually asked to resign, but not before the damage was done. You will see some of those kids do wonderful things because of the influence you have had on them. Very commendable. Good job.

Sounds like you've got a hell of a year ahead of you with some pretty cool stuff going together for the Donnie Smith show. A little off topic, but do you think you might be going down to Daytona for the Wyotech teacher visits this year? I know last year is was actually the same weekend as the Donnie Smith show so it didn't work out. This will be my second year and I can honestly say, leaving Minnesota in February to spend a weekend on Daytona Beach isn't all that bad! I've still got to stop by Kennedy sometime and see how you guys run your program over there. Keep it up!
