Default Can I adapt a BT springer top clamp to work with a VL springer?

I have a VL springer with a plug-in riser set up. I want to install a later BT style top clamp with ears/dogbones; I have had a chance to quickly offer up a crusty old BT clamp to the VL fork leg tops and it all seems to line up, though the IDs of the holes on the BT clamp look minutely smaller than on the VL one.

Can anyone advise?

Guy,
You can certainly do it, just keep in mind that some top trees will work better for this purpose than others. You'll need to open up the holes to about 1.06" (1-1/16") or so. It doesn't sound like much, but on some top trees it will make the outside bottom edges of the holes damn near paper thin. If I have a chance, I'll post up a couple of pictures for you of top trees that I've adapted for VL/RL springers. There are a few different ways you can open up the holes and still keep them concentric, but the best way to arrive at a nice clean final fit is with a reamer. Good Luck!

Geo.

Yeah a big twin top clamp should drop right onto a VL springer
than just depending on the stem size you are using will determine the type of stem nut to go with

Guy, here's a couple pictures for you -

The tree on the bottom right ^^^^ is the easiest type to adapt, it has the most "meat" to work with, plus they were made out of brass or bronze and are pretty easy to machine. But, they all work just fine!

A little more info about the picture ^^^^,

-the top left tree is an oem original VL/RL,
-bottom left is a homemade VL/RL,
-in between the two are a pair of homemade inserts which are threaded to accept risers and that drop into the VL/RL legs
-upper right tree is stock handlebar, shown prior to being bored out for VL/RL
-bottom right tree not bored either, but a prime candidate for the process
