Make sure you if you use gear lube, it's not GL-5, which is mostly what you find on the auto parts store's shelf these days. That shit tears up yellow metal, and you've got plenty of that in your FL's box.

As far as the best is a good question. I have a 50fl also and always used SAE60 motor oil in the hot weather, SAE50 in the cold...

For bikes needing 90 weight....Brad Penn GL4 "classic" 90 weight. About 6 bucks a quart around here. If your tranny doesn't leak you may want to try Redline synthetic GL4 MT .

In an older bike like your FL I'd use Lucas 80W-90. If she's loose and noisy maybe a 85W-140.

Usually I'm a synthetic proponent but I've found the Lucas dino gear oils superior to synthetics. Especially in vintage iron.

I use 60wt, same as the engine. I toss in Lucas stabilizer cause it keeps the stuff on the gears longer. I was sold when playing with the display toy in the parts house and figured it couldn't hurt.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzirt1Vzmls I know it's not the same but it made sense in my head.

Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-140 is all I use in my big twins nowadays. It makes gear changes much better; it is actually a noticeable difference.

BelRay 75-140 in my Shovelhead for the past 25+ years, before that 20-50 Power Blend like the book said.

Another Redline Shockproof Heavy believer here. Nothing else in my 76 4 speed or the 5 inna 4 speed case for many years. Even dumped it in my TC.
