Picture is crappy but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say 1934-35 HD V. Someone with more knowledge will come along and show you why I'm wrong.

Yep 34-35 VL 1936 VL had the tool box behind the tranny on the kicker side. 1933 had the earlier ribbed JD style fenders

35 also has a right hand side tool box as well. it has a notch out of the top left hand side of it to accommodate the frame.

Cool Re: Help identifying old bike in old pic?

What's the story on the pic Bob ? It appears he is wearing a U.S. Navy uniform and what looks like a cartridge belt and who knows what that long tube is strapped across his back ? Interesting !

That taillight appeared in '34 with the advent of the skirted fenders, although with a flat lens...
The reality is that the bike could be far different than our guesses, as it was very common to "update" a bike to newer specs in those days. Adding the new fenders and a new paint job made it look like a more modern machine.
The detail in that pic is too poor to see such things as manifolds, oil pump covers, and other telling details..

Yeah, It's a crappy pic. Thanks everyone for the clues.

The pic is from a friend of mine- his dad- and he wasn't sure about it. I could tell it was a 30's-40's Harley but that's the extent of my knowledge on the matter.

Thanks again,

Bob

Yeah Jon it's a mystery all right. The leather aviator hat and goggles, neckerchief and all white..

I wasn't sure if the the thing on his back was a fencepost or what.

Yeah. The guy says it was his dad's bike, but the pose looks forced. I mean, sidesaddle?
