The weather was great in Canberra today, so to get rid of the baby blue side cover I thought today was a good day to do some painting.
I have been priming and filling for the last few weeks and was happy with the smooth finish of both the oil tank and the sidecover. I did this by applying a few light coats first to promote adhesion, then just followed through with a coat every 20 minutes, 4 or 5 coats UPOL gloss black, then 5 coats UPOL clear coat. these UPOL cans are $20 for gloss and clear and $33 for high build primer. i used 2x cans primer, 2x cans gloss black and 2x cans clear. All good except for one small dent to the clear coat that i made with my respirator mask when i was peering too close. Should buff out hopefully. looks as good as a gun finish, particularly avoiding any dry patches around the anti froth tower and fill; well done.

i am at odds as to whether i should apply trophy stickers or bonneville stickers. or any stickers at all.
I like the idea of the original decals but im not too pedantic. The bike frame is a TR6p but the engine and colour combo is bonneville. Last edited by metaltriumph; 04-18-2017 at 07:07 AM. |

...may be put only the "minimum oil level" sticker on the oil tank and the Triumph emblem in the gasoline tank with the chromed stripe in the middle and just that.
There are some models that say: "650" |

If it was mine I would probably put trophy stickers on one side and bonneville stickers on the other and don't tell anyone. Just wait and see who picks up on it then tell them the inside joke.

I like the way you think KCgran. That's the sort of shit I like to do. Really pisses off some people.

just as well you are building your bike to please you and not "old mate" .
Your spray can paint turned out tops. I recently finished a 40's push bike resto/upgrade for a bloke using that U-POL paint and it is super good ,esp that clear. |

the engine is almost done.
From the outside the engine looks factory, the fins of the 750 Aerco barrels extend a bit wider than the standard 650 but its pretty close. Next is to polish up the clutch side cover and install the Boyer bransden electronic ignition. then wheels and forks so i can get it all together. eventually. Greetings , Not to rain on your great looking paint work...You may wish to check the UPOL TDS sheet on the clear coat or call your paint supply rep, Here in the USA that clear has little or no UV protection in it and will fade to a chalk white with little exposure in the sun light , ...it is designed to be used on the under side o hoods and in door jams that receive little sunlight, best regards ,Mike

however this is from the product sheet - "POWER CAN CLEAR COAT is a 1K, ready to use clear coat in an aerosol. It is used for finishing coated surfaces in order to achieve a high gloss, UV resistant, durable finish." ill keep any eye on it. with the progress so far i dunno whether this machine will ever get out in the sun anyhow! where did you get the U-POL product from?
Quality spray-can product is a bit 'Hit and Miss' I find. Can't be a 'Supercheap' product surely? cheers, Paul... |
