I got my magneto back from the maggy man the other day. I finally got some time to put it on. It started straight up but now I have oil leaking from the hole that comes fro the timing side of the motor to the outside.( hope this makes sense). So why is this happening, does it need vent some how? I've cleaned out the three holes on the primary side and cleaned the pressure valve on the timing side but it's still leaking. Oil is returning to the tank as it should and I've also drained the crank case from the oil it accumulated from sitting for a few months.
Cheers DF.

If this is a unit bike, the only oil-related holes that are on the timing side of this engine is where the oil pressure relief valve and the oil pressure sensor install. Depending on the year, there is a downward-facing crank breather tube (spike) that is behind the left cylinder, inboard of the primary case. If this is the thing you are referring to let me know. It should spit some oil, but should not leak constantly.

Ha! I forgot about that one since we mostly work on pre units. That hole is for your points wiring to exit the case. If you have oil leaking out there, you either need a cam seal or your timing cover gasket is leaking. The cam seal lives in the timing cover, so it is easy to check and replace, well, except for having to re-time the magneto
![]() If you don't have oil running out from where the magneto is mounted, I would guess the cover gasket is the culprit, since the hole/passage in question is angled downhill from the points recess, and the "gasket" portion of that passage is lower than the cam seal. The solution may be as simple as snugging down the timing cover bolts.

Cheers mate i'll check that. And as far as timing goes I've done it that many times I can do it in my sleep. This mag has been off more times then I want to remember. I'll check the seats and the gasket that I made for the timing cover. That gaskets could be the problem that I have made.
The oil at first was coming out form around the magneto as I had a rubber plug in the hole just so no water or dirt could get in there. It never used to leak from there so I'll just have to take it all apart and see what that problem is. Should there be anything in particular I should be able to see that is causing the problem or should I just buy a proper gasket and a new cam seal? Thanks.

I've changed the cam seal and it still leaks. And runs like a busted arse. But that's another thread!

check to see that the Hunt hex drive is spinning around all centered up in the cam.
If it moves around when you spin it over then that's why it it puking out of the seal.
