After a profitable year and being able to comfortably pay taxes I decided to get a Panhead. After looking locally I hit the auction site. $25-30K was way outta budget and the only thing that caught my eye was this 63 swingarm.

Of course I cringed when I saw the color and the pinstripes. Not to mention the shop name all over it. Found the same thing listed on Craigs and made contact. A deal was made and owner took listing off of auction site.

Onto the Porn.....

As she sits today.

The Glory Days.

Should be obvious to all that Suckerpunch built this bike. Not much info on their build as far as I can find. Lots of info on shop after Old Man Clayton burned a few.

So I pick her up last Sunday in BFE Oklahoma. Damn near Kansas border.
Owner Nick does a cold start ritual, and no dice. Waits a few and tries again. Glory Be, she's a runner ! Rocker clutch and Jockey shift. This will be interesting as I have never ridden that setup. Gravel road also. While my wife makes chit-chat w owner I tootle down the drive only to kill it at the road. Fuck. I hope she starts again. She does and off I go. I'm good till time to turn around. Back into first. Wait, where is first again ? Got it. Painful amount of gas and ease the clutch only to rocket down the gravel road with shit flying everywhere. Oh yeah, interesting. I manage to not look like a retard when pulling into driveway only to realize the brakes are shitty. Well, its a long driveway and I make a stop. Big grin on my face and off to do some paperwork ($).

The good:

Clean paperwork.
Recent(verifiable) rebuild on engine. Longbow Customs. See Facebook for build.
Factory frame, transmission, forks.

The bad:

Did I mention it has Suckerpunch all over it ?
Not a fan of turquoise.
Shovel swingarm/brakes.
Lack of braking.
It has Suckerpunch all over it
Seat is lame.
Super B w/ Superbowl is a bit funky when she's hot. Starting ritual is being worked out between she and I.
And it has Suckerpunch all over it.

Kick pedal looks like a chick on rollerskates and a cowboy hat taking a dump. Classy !

Shovel top in hand on Fri out to machine shop Sat.

List of shit to have done:

1. One spark plug Heli-coil coming out, new insert going in
2. One exhaust guide cracked, all new guides going in.
3. New valves/springs for every hole (hehe).
4 New rocker bushings and related hardware.
5 Crusty Rockerboxes getting the Shinola
6. Crusty jugs (No, Grandma. Not you) getting the clean/paint combo.
7. Fresh pistons/bore job.

Nothing else to report, back to what you where doing.

PORN:

Thats the spot where the jug hit the head during shipping.

People, if your gonna ship heavy, semi-fragile parts, then please PLEASE label the box as "HEAVY" and "FRAGILE" and pack it like a fucking heirloom. The box has signs of an "Oh shit, that"s heavy" crease that looked like the Cat in the Hat lid.

Im a little confused about lifter blocks for PanShovel.

Parts book list different blocks. 65 down versus 66 up. Pushrods are different also. Same lifters either way. Some aftermarket vendors are listing blocks that cover Pan or Shovel. I know there is some differences in pushrod tubes as well. I assume thats due to length to head/rocker arms.

The question is this....

Can Pan blocks be used with Shovel heads ? If Shovel blocks are used on Pan bottom will there be oiling issues to be sorted ?

Most of this Top Swap is rudimentary. Correct oiling is priority. Toss into the mix of an S&S oil pump possibility.

Answers are eagerly awaited.

Lower end at shop. Rebuilder says it could run as is, but couldn't answer for how long. I prefer to freshen it up and not worry. Rods are not factory, no surprise there. More will be revealed when he cracks it open.

Heads and jugs are getting a refresh as well.

Meanwhile....

Back to gas tanks. So I went and got the 3.5 Gal Ultima tanks. Nice fit, looked good. Full of welding slag and mineral oil. Only problem was they dont look anything like OG 3.5 splitters. Someone mentioned they would most likely be 4.2 gal and yep, too big.

So I scored a set of used aftermarket tanks. Look the part and have the swagger. Of course, same issue as the original Sally tanks. Poor fit. So after many cigarettes and a Redbull or two, out comes the anvil (14" piece of railroad track), Hammer, and welder. I straightened out the "Z" bend on lower, front mount on right tank to level things out a bit. Next up was shitty mold job at speedo ditch. It was rounded instead of a nice bend and could bee seen with dash cover on. I laid down a bunch of spot welds to even that portion out. Next up was centers along backbone. That looked like 10 miles of bad road. I scratched my head for a minute, lit up another ciggy and came up with a plan. Lets even the whole thing and straighten it up as much as possible.

The results...

As you can see, the right tank took a dive at the end. May be 100 tacks to bring it up to match. Both tanks got the end/centers extended inward. Right side was a tack stack along seam. Left side got a filler strip and then beads along the length. Both centers at dash got the extendo/straighten job also. All will be covered with epoxy primer and the skim coat of filler.

That is all. Everyone can go back to scratching their balls. Or their dog. Or their dogs balls. Dammit, I miss Shovithead.

Looks great my man, but I would want to dress that right tank down a little more and pressure test it, I know all too well how there could be a pinhole hiding in there and once you start making them pretty it's a real pain in your ass. That's the beauty and allure with these bikes, nothing ever quite seems to fit... I bought a sissy recently which was bent on a jig, perfect I hear you scream, nope. The support bracket was a mile out, had to use a G clamp and some serious love to make it fit!! all part of the endless fun.

I spoke to Shovit's wife recently she emailed me, was lovely to speak with her, but I also miss Russ a lot!

I suppose the oil was a rust inhibitor. Its main function was to keep the slag from rattling.

The thought occurred to me to chop the Ultima tanks. That way I could get that shit out of there. The stumbling block was keeping the dash. As the tanks moved inward, the backbone area would be static. Tank diameter decreases and "backing plate" get trimmed. Too much of the "little bit here, little bit there". I would rather do 1000 tack welds than make a mistake and toss a set of tanks.

We should change the name of this thread to something grandiose like "The Redemption of 2000's Cool Guy Chopper Shop Idiocy - There is Hope" or some shit.

Nice work. I admire your persistence.

Jason
I thought "Slaughterhouse Sally" was kind of dramatic. Maybe " Pile of shit that's marginally less shitty" is appropriate.

Good news. Lower end isnt bad. Some minor flywheel alignment issues along with jugs that weren't re-torqued is the reason for teardown.

Found good:

New cam, J grind
Factory timing gears in good shape
S&S breather gear, new

Oil pump w/ fresh gears in good shape

Found bad:

New aftermarket lifters +.005 scored badly (poor bore job in blocks)
Breather bore tight
Case bolts w/ mis-matched hardware. 1 had to be cut off

Im glad I decided to have it pulled apart. Peace of mind.

#211 ·
I love the J cam and hope you do, too. Solid lifters or juice?

Is the breather gear a standard one or the reed-style?

Doing good work on this, man. It's a slog. I've been there. But it feels fucking great when you lick it and you know every nut and bolt on it. That's been beaten into me by a number of the guys on the board.

It's worth it.

#212 ·
I will be running BMO hydro lifters. Dave is only making a few at a time and I caught him when he was about to do a couple of sets. IMO the best out there.

Breather is standard style

I'm tired of the "Fuck it, run it" mentality. In the past I would have beat this like a Gov't Mule and repaired as needed. I am at the point where fiddling with this and fucking with that is getting old. Do it right or sell it to someone who will.

#213 ·
You've got a great attitude, Tater.

I'd be permanently sour if I were in the same boat.

I ran a J cam in my 74" shovel for a long time. Silky smooth running.

Breather bore tight is way better than loose. Boring for oversize is a hassle. Consider a reed valve as was mentioned. (p.s. - i've never tried one)

If you're buying lifters and blocks, I can't say enough about how great the Velva-Touch set has treated me. Been running the same set for 18 years now. Even had a rocker failure and they were unharmed. Bullet proof. Worth the money.

Slaughterhouse Sally is a great name.

So here we are, a month later and still waiting on short block. Top end at machinist for 3 weeks also. Now I have tins (Well, 2 tanks and a plastic fender) at the painter. He claims a start date of "early next week". We'll see how that goes.

I have a suspicion that all the parts are gonna come in at the same time. Might be a good idea to clean the garage and make room for everything.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting on the rolling stool, smoking cigs, staring at the roller. With time to kill, the mind wanders. This time it wandered to the clutch pressure plate. Its a cheapo taiwan job. I wasnt sure if its aluminum or die-cast zinc. Only one way to know for sure. So I dig out an old (I mean OLD) can of Mothers mag polish. This can had a skin on top about a quarter of an inch thick. Fuck it, stir it up and give it a go. Got a little shine going. I decided the plate was needing a bit more. Green scrub pad and 3 minutes later the crust is off. Back to the polish. I think I had a total of 15 minutes into it and she looks really good.

I then sit back, light up another cig and admire my work. " Damn, that was easy ", I said out loud. Then the eyes wander to the forks. Ah, fuck. Here we go again. So I fetch another rag/towel combo and off we go. Had some stains at the weep hole on the brake backing plate that didnt want to disappear so easily. Also had a nasty black mark that looked like some dumbass run up on something. I look around and come up with a used half-sheet of 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Good enough for for polishing paint, should be good on alum. With a good spit onto the paper, I lightly sand out the stain. Hit it with the polish and that takes on a shine as well. Ol' Sally is a dirty legged bitch. So the lowers get the shinola also. The 1000 grit paper takes out the majority of minor scratches. Less that 1 hour into the forks.

Here is the porn in no particular order

If you look thru the wheel you get the before and after.

Before shot.

The scratch that got away. Too deep to get with the sandpaper. And besides, it matches the other glaring examples of buffoonery.

Now I know there may be 1 or 2 of you that will bemoan the fact that the "patina" is now gone. I say this...there is a difference between patina and neglect. I did not use any machines to clean the brightworks at all. Just a crusty can of polish, a bit of spit covered sandpaper and a towel. Trust me, there is still a whole lot of Sally going on here.

Looks like the engine will be coming home next week. Sheesh...its only been 4 months since I dropped it off. Then again, the tins have been at the painters for 2 months.

The Pan/Shov idea has been shelved. I found a set of outside oiler Pan heads that are in good shape. Altho they had a few helicoils on the cover rails backing out that left them looking a bit like Buckwheat from the "Little Rascals". Other than that they looked as if they had only been reworked once according to the shop. 1 funky exhaust spigot that I think may fly "as-is".

Meanwhile, I knew the kicker shaft was a bit wobbly. Black Friday of last year netted a set of Baker kick gears for 1/2 the list price so that gets addressed also. I'm glad I pulled the kick cover off. Bushing on inner gear was sloppy and kick shaft bushings are supper shitty. Clutch release shaft is aftermarket and was not able to locate e-clip. May be in the drain belly of transmission. Throwout finger looks like a cheapo and need replacement also.

Alright, alright, alright.

After a brief intermission of waiting for others to get it together, I am getting it together.

As it sits...

Kick cover got the once over. Then the twice over. As mentioned before, Baker kick gears installed. Throw out finger looked a bit fugly.

Was replaced by supposed NOS finger. While trying to stab cover,TO bearing, and rod thru mainshaft and fumbling for awhile, I thought "there must be a better way". There is...

That little tit on the end of the rod would make the whole set-up alot easier to manage. The one pictured got too pricey on the auction site for me, so I let it go. Oh, well. Just gotta work with what you got. No tits for me.

I received engine like this...

You may be able to see 2 cracked screw bosses on bottom. Warranty time. Back to builder. Some "lava"( as Grub would say) and fresh wrinkle, she is good to go.

#219 ·
very nice
What would annoy me is, did cover mounter not realise he cracked bosses.(slapdash)
or thinks no worries mug owner won't notice.
He claims " I thought it was mushy like it might be stripped, so I stopped."
All good, got taken care of. Ah, Sally. She be a finicky little hussy.

Story time...

Its was around September 2018 when I discovered the flaking aluminum around the intake seat of OG heads. Local ol timers said to run it. New timers ran for the hills. Our own Shovithead said he could look them over and repair or help sell them to offset the cost of replacements. So, off they went to Florida.

At that point Russ and I began an electronic relationship, sending pics of wives, bikes, and what not. No mention of how sick he had become. I waited patiently for work to begin on heads. Russ had 1 project ahead of me and would get to them soon. Our contact became less frequent. It would take weeks to get any feedback from Russ and then it would be a few words. He told me of his illness and he said he would get to my junk as soon as things were better. Then nothing. Message after message went unanswered.

Finally someone broke the news about his death. Fuck. No, really. Fuck. Im miss that bastard and his funny way of getting a point across.

Heads were in Purgatory for a while. So thats when the idea of Pan/Shovel got started. Its that or find "outie" heads in good shape. I beat the bushes for Pan heads. High priced shit that wasnt any better than the shit that was waiting in Fla. Our own corbis820 from JJ stepped in and delivered the heads back to me.

By that time I had already scored some decent heads. 6 months of searching and saying no, no, no....OK. So Shovel top end sits on the shelf, waiting for another day.

#221 ·

Refreshed and ready to go.

I guess at some point Roy worked the heads or Roy couldnt keep from tagging them.

1 broke fin, fixed up.

Front mount repaired.

BMO Velva Lifters and blocks

Old S&S manifold had too much clamp rash so ponied up the cash for some bling. Panifold !

Sally definitely need a "Brazilian".

Story time....

In the Austin area is Lake Travis. One "beach" is called Hippy Hollow.
Hippy Hollow is a clothing optional area that in the 70's was a hotbed of naked and half-naked swimmers. My father always seemed to launch his boat at the ramp nearest to Hippy Hollow. Go figure. So one sunny Saturday the family gets in the boat and makes a pass by Hippy Hollow. My mother pretends not to be angry while my father and us boys peer onto the beach looking for a show. We happen by a swimmer whose inflatable raft has sprung a leak. Not being a great swimmer, she asks for a ride back near the nude beach. My father being the great humanitarian that he is allow this topless woman all of 22 years old into the boat. My mother is fuming. I literally saw steam escaping her ears. My father tells us boys to keep our eyes forward to watch for floating debris so we dont hit any. I dont recall EVER hitting debris in the lake before and I'm sure its for my mothers sake that we do so. Of course we take turns watching the water then looking at the girl, watching the water then looking at the girl, and so on. The thing that sticks out the most in my mind was what was sticking out the most on this woman. HAIR. Like the old cartoon, HAIR BEARS. Ye-egads! I think she had Buckwheat hidden in her shorts. I'm talking hanging out by the hand fulls. Colin Kaepernick has got nothing on this chick. We make it by Hippy Hollow and drop off the woman much to the relief of my mother. The young lady gives my brother and I a wink as she says good buy and thank you. I will never forget that girl. Cant remember her face, but will always remember the bush.

Hows that for needing a "Brazilian"?

I like your story.

The metal may come and go.

The love and connections you create along the way are the reason we live.

For those in tune with what matters.

My goal in life is not money, fame, recognition.

It is connection, choice, understanding.

Thinking you may be on a similar path given this thread . . .
