After a profitable year and being able to comfortably pay taxes I decided to get a Panhead. After looking locally I hit the auction site. $25-30K was way outta budget and the only thing that caught my eye was this 63 swingarm.

Of course I cringed when I saw the color and the pinstripes. Not to mention the shop name all over it. Found the same thing listed on Craigs and made contact. A deal was made and owner took listing off of auction site.

Onto the Porn.....

As she sits today.

The Glory Days.

Should be obvious to all that Suckerpunch built this bike. Not much info on their build as far as I can find. Lots of info on shop after Old Man Clayton burned a few.

So I pick her up last Sunday in BFE Oklahoma. Damn near Kansas border.
Owner Nick does a cold start ritual, and no dice. Waits a few and tries again. Glory Be, she's a runner ! Rocker clutch and Jockey shift. This will be interesting as I have never ridden that setup. Gravel road also. While my wife makes chit-chat w owner I tootle down the drive only to kill it at the road. Fuck. I hope she starts again. She does and off I go. I'm good till time to turn around. Back into first. Wait, where is first again ? Got it. Painful amount of gas and ease the clutch only to rocket down the gravel road with shit flying everywhere. Oh yeah, interesting. I manage to not look like a retard when pulling into driveway only to realize the brakes are shitty. Well, its a long driveway and I make a stop. Big grin on my face and off to do some paperwork ($).

The good:

Clean paperwork.
Recent(verifiable) rebuild on engine. Longbow Customs. See Facebook for build.
Factory frame, transmission, forks.

The bad:

Did I mention it has Suckerpunch all over it ?
Not a fan of turquoise.
Shovel swingarm/brakes.
Lack of braking.
It has Suckerpunch all over it
Seat is lame.
Super B w/ Superbowl is a bit funky when she's hot. Starting ritual is being worked out between she and I.
And it has Suckerpunch all over it.

Kick pedal looks like a chick on rollerskates and a cowboy hat taking a dump. Classy !

Yep. Shows a bit of wear on the ways close to the spindle. Still some evidence of the original scraping marks in that area. Rest of bed covered in original scrape marks. Spindle showing .0015 runout when I did a quick check. . . but that was with an old collet and not inspecting and cleaning the spindle taper first so I'm not that worried.

When I went to inspect it I checked it pretty thoroughly. I'm always pretty wary of nicely repainted old tools. I have no use for sawdust and spit glue show pony in my garage.

I cut a 1" x 20tpi screw on it before giving deposit and it did a nicer job than my lathe. Thread form and tracking were spot on.

Met an interesting character and got a story too. This one's out of a Navy ship and still has the original issue asset tag and delivery markings (went direct from SB to Navy).

I think it'll be a great tool.

Damn, Jason. did you get it from an old lady who only drove it on Sundays ?

To answer the question.... re-pop shock stud. Replacing a bent re-pop shock stud. But its chrome and shiny. Thats the important part.

So i spend alot of time in the garage smoking cigs. Probably not the best thing considering the amount of flammables. But it does give me time to think. Ideas come and go. Some good, most not.

So while this bike languishes in a state of perpetual standstill, I have been rolling the gas tank issue around in my head. The Suckerpunch paint is definitely on the way out. 5 gallon tanks are too big. Sporty tanks look too small w wideglide and 7" headlight. So I decide to keep the 3.5 gallon "Punchy" tanks. Liner is good inside, so why not ?

Well...this may be why. The fit is fucking dog dick. Left tank is visibly taller at front and very back. Right tank has 1/4" (thats 7mm for you Brit guys) hump in center. All of this is at the backbone/centerline. I could "work" the backbone mounts a bit but only makes matters worse in the center. On top of all that going on, the notched portion for backbone bolts dont line up for shit either.

Add to that the 'V' at the seat is pronounced.

Ok, so most likely aftermarket tanks. No hallmarks on mounts. I think I read on another forum years ago that factory tanks where not so pretty. True or not ? Either way, the simple solution is 2" aluminum strip along tank split. Add some small tab/bung. no big deal. Had the tanks not been lined, I would be tempted to add some thin round stock along split to even up the notches. That could take care of the center hump on right tank.

Paint ideas. Flames are forever cool. Been there. Multiple lines and colors are neat also. Been there. So after 2 Redbulls I get out the masking tape and do some scallops. I'm no artist, so bear with on this one. Tape and taggers marker.

Feedback on scallops would be appreciated.

Jireh has 3.5 bobs in stock for $103 part 20-59. No 5g's in stock. I can't speak to the quality of these, as these are made in Taiwan. I have purchased tanks from them in the past but the ones I purchased 10 years ago were made in Mexico. Those were excellent, and made of heavier steel than factory.

Maybe someone has used the one's they are selling now and would speak to the present quality.

The scallops need more size forward, I think. Scallops can be a great look.

I had looked at "Ultima" tanks. After the cheapo fender fiasco I have been leery of bargain parts. I am in process of returning tanks to auction site seller. Seems some cant tell the difference between 3.5 and 5. Guess who pays for return shipping?

More size forward on scallops ? Do you mean "push" the whole thing forward towards neck or add thickness? Like go from 2 1/4" to 2 3/4", that sort of thing ? Opinions on the rear fender scallop, please. Thats the one that seems to mess with my head

#177 ·
True. Most have the front of tank completely the same color as flame/scallops. Some scallops are stand-alone contrasting color as well as usually angular. Sporty tanks are perfect for angular. Bob tanks look odd that way.

Just a brief word on tanks, if you care.

I think the aftermarket ones are made very, very nicely...but the shape and size are wrong. They don't have the elegant taper to the rear of the original three-anna-halfs.

The aftermarket ones hold something like four and change, too, which is why I think there is confusion on the size of them.

As far as the fit, they do need tweaked. My oldtimer buddy Dick (ibop7 on here) and I have a constant argument about the best way to fit them: he is a tab bender. I space them. I've had to egg some of the mount holes before to get stuff to sit just so on the bike.

And about the rear fender: looks are of course very subjective, but I might make the rear scallops fall down farther onto the side skirts a bit; I think that would help 'em look "right."

I found the more expensive V-Twin 3.5gal. replica tanks that are year/emblem specific are a lot nicer than anybody else' offerings.
They also have the inexpensive one where the left doesn't fit the right and one end is tapered and the other blunt......

Tanks left to right are '54, '55 and 1941

VonWegener is the Von Winner ! Last pic(bottom row) looks exactly like what I have going on. Right tank, at seat, takes a dive into the backbone. Forming a nasty angle. I took a look at Teds site and model/badge specific is great if you want fuel rods, badges and tank shift. Perhaps VT-38-0574 or
VT-38-0571 would be appropriate.

In an effort to answer ALL questions....

Yes, I have considered damn near every tank known to man. I do plan on running speedo(hehe) so splitty Bobs it is.

My buddy just did this same thing, and he has a controller that's actually a Bluetooth unit, meaning the operation station is literally a box that's held to the tool with Velcro. Could not have been easier.

Now for something different.....

My heads are in Purgatory. I may not see them for months. Thats a story for another time.

Meanwhile, I go see the engine builder and harass him about getting the short block looked over. My first contact was in late Nov/early Dec. Was told try back in early Feb. They moved the shop and are now back at it. Visited yesterday and was told to bring it in in 2 weeks. Yea !

So without Pan heads, I gotta do something else or Sally sits. Again. Riding her on the lift doing "Vroom Vroom" noises with a fan blowing my hair aint getting it no more.

Solution...PanShovel. Purist will groan, but I wanna ride.

I have a complete '66 top end on its way. Appears factory and pistons are @ .010 over. Could be a great score or a hidden nightmare. We'll see.

Good news is '63 cases have outside oiling. Easy enough to lube the rockers. Anyone have a pic of a nice oil line set up for this ? Since right case has oil fitting in between cylinders Im thinking "Y" pipe to cross over fittings and welding rear rockerbox feed fitting. Speaking of oiling, I most likely will run a S&S shovel pump. If I stay solid lifters its a bolt on. I prefer hydro and will have to have a passage drilled. I have no idea if Pan pushrods are cool or if I gotta get Shovel sticks.

So I humbly ask the resident experts of Jockey Journal to guide me thru the process. Opinions are welcome if you can back it up with personal experience. If you have done the conversion, please respond with the "Do's and Dont's". Research tells me the mid/late70's heads would be better, but this is what we have to work with.

Let the games begin.

#186 ·
Did someone say games ?

This game is called "WTF ?".

Engine out of frame. Fairly simple. One thing I didnt notice until I had it on the stand was this under the genny.

The good news is the drain plug is a sawed off bolt. Sheesh.

#187 ·
Common. Question is was it bolted up to the frame with no shims? Yes means that maybe the frame was used to jig and the frame is bent also.
Bolt for timing hole is better than a pipe plug, which can lead too cracking the case if over tightened.

#189 ·
Shimmed. 3 pieces of thin sheet tucked in front of bolt. I dont think it suc=h a big deal. Weld some fill and plane it flat. If i could fine a steel wedge about 2-3 degrees I would tack it onto frame.

No problem , timing plug is stripped and silly coned in.

Anyone wanna chime in on the Shovel top ?

I can go one better, I had a tapered plug in my pan, overtightened so much the fucker almost burst my left case.

It seems the chap before me decided it needed 50 lbs of torque on it to match some of the torques holding the fucking flywheels in. Broke my heart.

Pan shovels are great, benefits outweigh the negatives, as long as you do it right. Two of my friends have converted theirs, sweet as a nut.

> Anyone wanna chime in on the Shovel top ?

You probably deserve a beating, but not for wanting to get your damn bike on the road. Go ahead and do it! Not quite free, but cheap. Damn near ready-to-wear. Some vague notional performance/reliability improvement. Pan/shovels look fine. The combination has long since become a classic in its own right. I can't think of more arguments in favor, but they almost certainly exist.

#192 ·
> Anyone wanna chime in on the Shovel top ?

You probably deserve a beating, .
I knew that was coming. Thanks for getting it out of the way.

PanShov assumptions....

Shovel Base Gaskets
Shovel Pushrods
Shovel Intake to match heads

Im plowing thru a ton of internet discussions about P/S conversions but no real recipe for success. I may have to nit-pick every thread on JJ to find it.
