After a profitable year and being able to comfortably pay taxes I decided to get a Panhead. After looking locally I hit the auction site. $25-30K was way outta budget and the only thing that caught my eye was this 63 swingarm.

Of course I cringed when I saw the color and the pinstripes. Not to mention the shop name all over it. Found the same thing listed on Craigs and made contact. A deal was made and owner took listing off of auction site.

Onto the Porn.....

As she sits today.

The Glory Days.

Should be obvious to all that Suckerpunch built this bike. Not much info on their build as far as I can find. Lots of info on shop after Old Man Clayton burned a few.

So I pick her up last Sunday in BFE Oklahoma. Damn near Kansas border.
Owner Nick does a cold start ritual, and no dice. Waits a few and tries again. Glory Be, she's a runner ! Rocker clutch and Jockey shift. This will be interesting as I have never ridden that setup. Gravel road also. While my wife makes chit-chat w owner I tootle down the drive only to kill it at the road. Fuck. I hope she starts again. She does and off I go. I'm good till time to turn around. Back into first. Wait, where is first again ? Got it. Painful amount of gas and ease the clutch only to rocket down the gravel road with shit flying everywhere. Oh yeah, interesting. I manage to not look like a retard when pulling into driveway only to realize the brakes are shitty. Well, its a long driveway and I make a stop. Big grin on my face and off to do some paperwork ($).

The good:

Clean paperwork.
Recent(verifiable) rebuild on engine. Longbow Customs. See Facebook for build.
Factory frame, transmission, forks.

The bad:

Did I mention it has Suckerpunch all over it ?
Not a fan of turquoise.
Shovel swingarm/brakes.
Lack of braking.
It has Suckerpunch all over it
Seat is lame.
Super B w/ Superbowl is a bit funky when she's hot. Starting ritual is being worked out between she and I.
And it has Suckerpunch all over it.

Kick pedal looks like a chick on rollerskates and a cowboy hat taking a dump. Classy !

Looks like this old girl might see some proper miles and has been rebuilt with love, not fucked and tossed in the docks per se. My panhead suffered with similar levels of woes I remember considering flying to the US to hunt the guy down and strangle him haha! different sized pistons was the best of surprises I found.

Glad she's almost there! damn you deserve some time on her after the work!

I have good new and bad news.

The good news...

Tins are back from the painter. Pics will come soon.
The bike is almost complete, with the exception of installing tins and carb.

The bad news.

While rolling engine over to do pushrods I did not notice a rag had fallen into belt drive. Seemed stiff when rotating and heard a "pop". I checked primary side and pulled rag out. Clutch basket seems a bit wobbly. Looks like I have to pull clutch and hub to see whats going on.

Damn it.

Sally, why do you want to be so bitchy ?

#233 ·
Ok, here we go.

Funky clutch issues. As said before, the clutch shell was rocking and rolling and I noticed the pressure plate moved a bit side to side as well.

I tore into it for a look-see.

A little rusty. No surprise with open primary

Some scoring on fingers. No deep grooves. Fiber surface ground up.

Retainer chewed up from wobble

Found 2 of the 3 long fingers loose. Not sure if someone welded this up or thats the way its supposed to look.

Clutch shell. Groovy ! Scored at hub surface

Clutch steels. Neat spring loaded balls to keep it quiet.

So with a shitty hub and a groovy shell the decision was made to replace the whole thing. Im sure with time and effort the "original" parts could be made to work. I prefer to replace and not have to get back in there for a while.

#234 ·
So the decision was made to replace clutch/shell.

The original primary is BDL so I went that direction. New clutch basket reveals that the original was DEEPLY cut. Its possible someone may have chucked it up on a lathe to clean it up at least once, maybe twice.

New clutch is BDL Competitor. I have run a couple of the Primo's and decided to try the BDL. Seemed OK out of the box. Sally had other ideas. After pressing the hub/basket together and sliding it onto the mainshaft I reached for the hub nut. 1/2 a turn and it stops. Hmmm. Try old nut and she spins on easily. Back to new nut. 1/2 a turn and stops. I try some Emory cloth to inside of new nut to see if any burrs are the cause. No dice. Same issue. Fuck. So now I wait to see if vendor can score a new nut under warranty. Meanwhile factory nut "could" get cut down to work. That idea is on the back burner until I hear back about warranty.

#235 ·
I got the hub nut sorted out. I asked the vendor to send a replacement only to have the same issue of nut threading on 1/2 a turn. At that point I decided it was not them but me who was not paying attention. So very gently started to turn the nut with a socket wrench. 1 turn good. back it off, take a look. I could see the nut was giving up some shavings but not the mainshaft. Gradually getting further onto the mainshaft. Finally sunk it home and the nut goes on/off with no need to manhandle.

Now at this point I have the bike complete minus the rear fender(more on that later). So whats a boy to do ? Start kicking !

I do the ritual (as best as I can remember) and not happening. Checking this and checking that, kick again. Checking this and checking that, kick. Come on, Sally. I refuse to get mad. I also refuse to beg. After 4 hrs of on and off kicking, I give up and push her back into garage. I am not defeated. I assume she's flooded to the point of "leave 'er alone" .

While smoking a few cigarettes and eyeballing the bike later last night, I see that the carb is still moist. Hmm. Seems odd. I set a fan nearby and come back an hour later. Still wet. Double hmm. I grab a flashlight to see into the carb throat. While doin so, I notice the puddle at the plate is moving. Triple hmm. Gas is running like a stuck open float. Thats odd. The petcock is closed. Isnt it ? I go get my glasses and look at the petcock. Just so you know, when I have my glasses on its like my mind suddenly become clear. So does my eyesight. My brilliant deductive mind determines that in fact, NO, the petcock is not off. I had been kicking 'ol Sally like a Govt Mule for nothing. Sigh. Shut of the 'cock, pull the plugs, and leave the fan to dry up the carb.

So this morning, after running a few errands, I push Sally back onto the driveway. I look down and see the scars from yesterdays kick frenzy on the pavement. The stand has left many marks. A fresh charge on the battery, petcock ON this time, I give a couple of prime kicks. Key/choke on and kick. Nothing. Kick, nothing. Kick and a pop. Kick and fire! Yeehaw, its a runner ! Set the idle and listen for odd noises. Fresh engines have a certain "whir" that can be pleasant or alarming. No surprises so far. The wife comes out in her bath robe to see what the ruckus is. About 3 minutes in, I fiddle with the idle only for the bike to die. She wont start back up. Sally has the last word.

Kicking Sally like a WHAT?

Good work.

Incidentally, the fingers are not supposed to be like that. I got one the same way at some point... who the fuck is tightening the bolts down hard enough to do that?

Fingers ? Your talking about the old hub, right ? I have gone from "WTF ?" to "seems about right".

My dog has the nickname of "Reluctant Gentleman". Sally may be called the "Reluctant Lady".

BTW, found the first leak. front intake pushrod tube @ lifter block. New blocks vs. new tubes. Looks like the tube didnt push down into the block far enough. A little sanding around the tube flange and cross your fingers.

#238 ·
Yeah, the hub fingers. I just never thought I'd see two hubs fucked up like that.

I had an abortion just like you did. My attitude progressed just like yours is.

Mine had coarse-thread bolts installed.

#239 ·
I thought that a new basket and clutch/hub would solve all the transmission issues but not quite. After installing engine and then primary I discovered the sloppy basket/hub. I also noticed what might have been mainshaft wiggle. So the hope was to replace obvious shitty parts and see what we have. That being said, when I grab the belt and twist or pinch it between thumb and fingers I can see the rear chain move as the clutch/basket moves slightly towards front of bike. Its not just moving chain on either top or bottom but top and bottom.

And then there is the stuck carb float flooding the engine even with the petcock off. Bike on the lift I opened butterfly, shined a light and saw a river of gas sitting in the intake manifold. Had to lean the bike to drain it out. Just so everybody knows, its the dreaded "Shitty B Carb" that some people are so "fond" of.

So close and yet so far. Just like rehab. LOL

I've never run a Competitor, so I don't know what that involves. I do know that with un-whupped parts, Big Fix rollers, and a Ram-Jet retainer, I have never run into a four-speed clutch I couldn't make buttery-smooth.

#241 ·
After replacing the complete clutch/shell package it was determined that the mainshaft wiggle was the culprit. Out comes the 4 speed and off to the shop. I am ill-equipped and uneducated on transmission rebuilds so the local know-it-all gets my money. I decided to replace 1st gear with the 2.60 ratio. The 3.0 wasnt working well with the foot clutch.

While the shop was in the transmission they had to replace a few things...

Bearings/bushings
Main race 2 over

Main Drive 4th gear
3-4 shift clutch
1-2 shift clutch
shift fork main shaft
shift fork center shaft
counter shaft
Shift pawl bushing
Shifter springs

Some of that stuff would have been serviceable but I preferred to do a full-on rebuild/refresh. My wallet is lighter but it I have a transmission that is reliable for years to come. Feels smooth and buttery. Clicks instead of clanks. And clean. Lets not forget clean.

ITS ALIVE !!!!!!!

Starts, runs, rides, stops. Its about fucking time. Damn near 2 years since the saga of Sally (at least the chapter that includes me) began. The only thing that hasn't been replaced, rebuilt, massaged or scrubbed is the front forks. Front brake to be addressed after some break in miles. I'm not convinced the seat is staying. And look beyond the blue/black front pipe. Generator had the sportster gear on it and add the shitty but new points to the mix created a hot spot. Caught it before any internal destruction.

Comments, critiques, and general razzing welcome.

Nifty "speed" holes in air cleaner. Its a Sportster CV set up with K&N filter.
Added some mounting holes and looks way better than the S&S. I had to run a 1" spacer on intake to clear outside oilers with E carb. Cleaner tucked in fairly close to tanks.

1 other issue addressed was clutch springs. The BDL set up came with 9 heavy springs. A real bitch in slow and go/stop light situations. Easy enough, pulled 3 out and foot clutch action is smooth.

#247 ·
60 miles of break-in/shake-down.

Sally is weeping. Leaking oil at front of engine. At first glance, it appears to be coming out at dizzy base. I spoke to engine builder and he say it might be the idler gear bolt thru hole behind generator. She's running like a champ so I will pull genny first and pookie up the spot.

I gotta say...rough-assed backroads with tight turns and ruts at intersections can be quite exiting while remembering(at the last possible moment) that the shift pattern is "reversed" and the front brake is mostly ornamental. Lets not forget the 25 degree incline at intersection with an asshole who pulled up a little too close behind me. Good times.
