Default need advice on flipped mirrors (sportster)

hey guys,

A while back , my neighbor backed up over my yamaha... no big loss the bike was a beater... anyways, I replaced it with a 01 XL883c. I've been to HDforums, and its way too "harley" for me. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a black and orange leather vest and pissing on everyone who doesn't own a harley.

back on topic... I found this http://xorl.wordpress.com/2011/05/28...son-sportster/ and thought it was nice easy place to start in making my bike mine, unfortuantly, my bike doesn't have the "small hole" in pic #6

I was wondering if anyone here has tried this on an older sporty (98-02) and if you pass some knowlage this way!

The problem is that on the right side (from driving position) the mirror and turn signal are all mounted on the mirror stem, left side doesn't have this issue.

Any advice would be much appriciated

Thanks boys

i have an 01 xl1200c. I just have a mirror on the left hand side because of this issue.

Do you really need 2? I know the one i have is useless except for looking up my sleeve do to my high bars.

Piss on the old guys at HDForums all ya want (I'm not a member), but I'd be willing to bet that 98% of 'em could figure out how to flip a fucking mirror upside down. You're gonna fit in real good with the cool kids.

Relocate the turn signals to the forks. There's a vairiety of products and methods. My preference is to mount them just above the lower tree, (makes the bike look lower).

Then the hand controls are free for any mirror / mounting you want. Watch out for tank clearance at full turn. You may have to rotate / change the handlebars, or the risers to achieve your look. Personally, I don't like the flipped mirrors because I have to look too far down off the road to use them, but that's just me so I'm gonna go with bar end mirrors on my old Sporty. Maybe a set of Napoleon's or something similar.

Lol... no punchline

I'm seriously new to this whole culture, as i've been riding around on a jap/burner for years. Never really attemped wrenching anything on a bike. Thats why I said I wanted to start off with something easy (flipping my mirrors)

@ Berub9a2 do i really need 2, personaly I don't need 1, I'm a rather big guy so all i see in my mirrors are my shoulders... but the lawman says I need 2

@punkrod Yeah been reading around and jpcycle has a super cheap turn sigmal kit for about 30$.... And like you said, that free's up that area for pretty much anything

To everyone else, I'm sorry I wasted your time with this, I know this a serious gearhead forum and my question is a little on the retarded side. This is all very new to me

We were all there at some point. Standing over our first bike that we spent our life savings on (up to that point). Holding a wrench in one hand worried about fucking it up.

1. get off computer and take your ass outside.
2. stare at the problem
3. grab tools
4. figure it out
5. buy manual to fix retarded mistake

sorry hope you dont take that ass a smart ass answer, just not a big fan of people that ask retarded questions and cant figure out how to pee without reading a blog/forum...thats how you start somewhere.

Dufuss,

It looks like that bolt is just a pinch bolt. If your bike doesn't have one, you'll have to figure out how the turn signals on your bike are bolted and loosen them. That's the beauty of threaded fasteners, you can always tighten them back up if things don't work out.

Like the others said; Just GO and DO it. At least you're trying. Most don't.

Use common sense and don't be a ham fist.

Good luck.

You could just mount them on the bars with a clamp on set. Look at some of my pics if you want, and you should be able to see the one I have on mine. Look at where you would like everything, and then walk around Lowes for a while. If the first version of what you come up with is shitty, change it later. Just dont spend an ass ton of money until you are sure thats what you want. Punkrod has a good idea for you about the turn signals. If you are going for minimalistic, you could get marker lights and mount them in the place of the turn signals. Are you sure that you have to have 2 mirrors? http://www.abatewis.org/docs/msfstates2007.pdf has the motorcycle state laws. Good luck bro.

Yeah, just move 'em to the forks, I did that on my Shovel. There are a few options through varoius aftermarket shops. Mine attatch to the lower trees pinch bolts.

Sometimes ya gotta think outside of the box...

I thought this was a cool way to deal with mirrors. Wish I'd thought of it...

I would be willing to bet, that everybody on here, at one time or another, was a newbie. Not everybody is a natural mechanic. A question asked, is usually a question answered. If you don't know the answer, ask the question. We all start out pretty ignorant, and learn either from questions, or broken pieces. No matter how stupid the question may seem, if you don't know the answer, you just don't know the answer. No matter what you ask, you will get two different answers. You are a stupid idiot, and the real answer. Take the real answer and ignore the rest.
