Default tank fittement spilt tanks for a 47 harley

Hey guys , did some searching but didn't find the ansewer I was looking for. I have a 47 knuckle frame and want to use stock shift tanks. I am wondering up to what your models will fit with this type of frame? I see all kinds of s*** on eBay everything says knucklehead or pan head on them . I'm thinking of starting out with pan head tanks there a little cheaper and I can maybe get real 47 tanks
down the road . same deal with the rear fender to was wondering what year models will fit directly into the frame. It's rediculous how everything has pan or knuckle on these auctions . think I'm going to start flagging some of them because I have to sift through all this b******* that has nothing to do with knuckle or pan parts and "look at the pictures and check for proper fittement ! It's really bullshit ...
Thanks ken.

Any tanks from '36 OHV up will fit a stock knuckle frame including all Panhead and Shovelhead model tanks. But Knuckle tanks will not fit a Pan or Shovel without modification as the underside does not have enough clearance.
All Knuckle and '48-'50 Pan are handshift only, most '51-'53 are as well, after that more are footshift tanks and handshift types get harder to find and more expensive.
Same with the rear fender, any up to '57 will fit any other stock rigid frame.

These are the inside views of a pair of '47 specific tanks. Note the flat lower edge without the indentations for the Pan rocker covers. However some knuckle tanks exist with the indents and the only difference is the location of the right side fuel line barb. They were either very late production or replacement tanks from the early '50s. '47 tanks are the only ones with a difference to consider since externally they look like '48-'50 tanks. And all earlier Big Twin tanks were either OHV or Sidevalve U series, and there is no mistaking them. (Although XA tanks can be mistaken for U)

You can also modify a 41-46 knuckle tank to fit your application as was done here. Just clearance the lower part where the dash sits to go from the catseye base to the 2 light dash as this previous owner did.

At the going price of '41-'46 tanks any modification is a bad idea.
Besides, you still do not have the correct shift gate.

For real , Thats why I wouldn't. Mind starting out with panhead tanks until I find that right set. $1500 gets you some ones that need tlc I hate to say.
