Default build thread number one - WM20

As if I needed another project

This one is a 1943 WW2 WM20 500 Side Valve

I saw a video from a few years ago of it running so I am hoping the motor is good. Everything on the bike is loose so I have some sorting to do and as I post other photos you will see that it has other minor (I hope) issues as well.

Worked on a couple of those about ten years ago. They aren't over-powered, but sure are fun to putt around on. At least it looks like you're starting with a whole bike instead of a truckload of parts. Keep us posted please.

This must be the best-documented old shonker (in photographic and as-purchased terms) on the J.J.

I reserve the right to call your M20 a shonker, and worse, 'cause I had one myself. A '39. Highly enjoyable ol' slug, once I'd removed the perplexing Third Reich iconography spray-painted all over it. Thanks for showing and showing and showing us yours!

Those photos may come in handy with the restoration. I should do that.

Those were just from my iphone . But I am a photographer by trade so maybe that helps

I never really intended to post this story here . I was googling WM20s and a few old threads from JJ came up. One had someone local to me with the same bike. I thought we could connect. Also thought it would be a good resource for machine shops and what not... Connecting through the old posts didnt work so I started a new one...

I was good to myself this Christmas though and I will post some photos of the new parts I got for this project... For now the wife is watching over my shoulder so I have to wait till she goes back to teaching online.

I hope she doesnt sell all this stuff for what I told her I paid

Nice. What’s your plan for it, a full on restoration or mechanical only?

Happy New Year!! Mechanical first and correct parts as I go... As in I know that battery box is wrong but if it works thats fine for now... Get it running and change it as I find one down the road ... etcetera etcetera.... Eventually I would like this one to be correct ... Or as correct as I can afford.

Fresh in from the UK... Some NOS and some not so NOS... Rebuilt speedo and drive.

Of course the levers werent what I was expecting... Two clutch levers ... Now I have three since one came on the handle bars too.... The parts from the UK arrived in a week but the handle bars from WI took 2 months via the post office.... But I am happy with everything and the UK guy said he will find me a brake lever

This tool roll will be for my B33 project.

NOS Lucas Battery / never used... I may decide to keep it as is and copy the external box to hide a modern battery. Will I stay 6 volt or go 12 volt . That is the question

There was a shortage of rubber during the war so cloth grips were used... I will have to make some Brass ends for them to make them look correct. I think I saw a tutorial on that some where

Continuing to investigate what is needed for this bike I took it out of the garage and into the light. First real look over since filling my mind with the knowledge I have learned here and elsewhere.

Figured out the reason that the bike felt so wobbly . Wiggling the back end around ( I had noticed how bad it was when I unloaded it the first time and thought it was just all of the loose bolts) a second set of eyes pointed out how loose the head stock bearings are. Then we looked closer at the front forks and there are some sloppy repairs or something. (see photos) The forks are gonna have to come apart. Cleaned up and I presume replace things like the friction disc ect. I guess I should have the sloppy welds ground off to see how the repairs were done. Do the have plugs in the tubes? That sort of thing... Then hopefully a nicer weld job and put it back together properly.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to deal with this . Suggestions on where to get the "wear and tear" parts. And warnings if you think of other problems to look for.
