For those who may not know, Darby is my crew chief. He's been crewing for me for the past six years and it should be said that without his help I don't believe any of the records would have been possible.

After Monday mornings diabolical record return run and three more equally bad runs that day we ran on Tuesday. Here he checks to make sure I put the engine in.

This is his favorite place. Impound with a glass of (really cheap) champagne. Hopefully we'll be back there this year with some good stuff.

I sure hope it will GS. The target is to top 140 (and not blow it up!). Its been over 130 NA at Bonneville and El MIrage so I think its capable.

Joe (Darby) sent me an email reminding me of the other problem last year. Wet salt. It packed into the sidecar wheel fairing and everywhere else. After a couple of runs we dumped the fairing.

Darby is more than just my crew chief. When Lars Neilsen arrived from Denmark a couple of years ago on his own Darby jumped in and crewed for him. Lars had his beautiful blown 1941 Indian over. This year he is bringing a blown 750 Nimbus (look that up!). Joe and I will crew for him again.

That Indian is super-cool, and a blown Nimbus...?

Looked it up and wasn't disappointed.

I still get a kick out of that afternoon you spent showing me around your shop back in 2010, a couple of weeks before you took off for the salt. Having never seen an LSR bike (or even a Weslake) in the tin before, that was pretty damn amazing. Thanks again for that, and it's cool be able to follow your exploits since.

Can't wait to see how that blower does...

I mentioned earlier that I figured the cause of the slow runs was a voltage drop from running a smaller battery. Several LSR guys I talked to suffered the same problem and some info led me to believe that was the problem. I left the engine in place while I made up the manifolds for the blower. Pulled it out to do a clean up, finish weld the lower mount and check the engine over.

I wasn't expecting any surprises. The Weslake has proved itself to be one stout engine. So I was surprised when I the piston. Definitely not expected. Fortunately the bottom end is in great shape. I talked to Dave Brant (West coast Weslake guru) who supplied the piston to see if he had another. The piston is out of an Italian GM speedway engine. He had none but talking to him he asked where the seizure happened. I said strangely enough its at the bottom of the cylinder. To me it was a curious question. His answer was interesting. "Sounds like lack of lubrication." Then it struck me. When I ran a record 130 at El Mirage in Oct. 2012 I had the engine sealed so I wouldn't have to strip it again if I were to run another record. With the sidecar wheel debacle last year I didn't get to run until Aug. 2013. Plenty of time for the oil to drain off the cylinder wall. More than likely the reason it ran 128 on the first run and diabolical after that.

At least it beats the usual limp excuses. "The sun was in my eyes." "There was salt on my visor." My cell phone was ringing." "There was a naked lady at the mile marker." No wait. That's a valid excuse.

Another offering to the gods of speed.

That's a nasty surprise Bill.
If you go deeper into the donk, check the 'rod is still within length specs, I was chattin' with Phil Crump a while back (he rebuilds his son Jason's engines) , he was saying they usually replace the 'rods after a season (speedway racing in Europe) as they are usually stretched !
Tiny
PS, it must be a Bonneville thing, I spent a LONG while @ the one mile last year at Lake G, and didn't see any nekid girls

Strange thing Tiny, I didn't feel it tighten. It just ran 7-8 mph slower than I felt it should have. I made 6 more runs after that. When I took it apart the engine was free. I didn't measure the rod but I don't think it stretched.

P.S. Nekid gals are exclusive to Bonneville. They are the cause of more lost records than blown engines.

I had figured I'd be in for a long search to find a GM piston short of going to the factory. I called Dave who supplied the piston originally. No luck but he gave me a phone no. of a guy in England who might be able to help. I got an email from a friend in Denmark (Rasmus on here). He sent me an English ebay listing for a Wiseco piston kit for a GM. ???? Wiseco do GM pistons? I gave them a call last Monday. "GM piston? Yup, we have one on the shelf. $282. You'll be impressed". For that price I better be. It arrived yesterday. Open the box and the piton is in a black bag with a drawstring. Wasn't sure if I got a piston or a bottle of expensive perfume.

Handsome piston. Monday I head over to a friend's machine shop in Fontana. I have no way of accurately measuring the bore and Wiseco says .0031" clearance. I want .005" clearance as I'm running gas and the salt is three miles. Hope it can stand up to the abuse its going to get. Time to get back to work.

Bill, since you have it apart, are you going to lower the compression as you are now running a blower? Its smart to add a little extra running clearance to the piston / cylinder. Those pistons look Moly Coated on the skirts. I think I'd go an extra .0015 clearance. That extra .002 might be just a hair much. Break in is a little hard to do on a race engine I realize. Anyways, as always enjoy the updates and wish you well out there on the salt!

Ceramic coating will help Bill, 'specially when blown.
The anti scuff skirt treatment is a few poofteenths thick, so coat it before you set your clearances.
It only cost me $27 per piston to coat with thermal barrier crown, and anti scuff (designed to wear off) skirts

Out of curiosity. are there any guys that show up with their race set up alone? Not everyone can take vacation at the same time. I know two people would be for the best. Just wanted to know. I'm working a little something on paper right now and so far I may be a loner out there.

DS. There are some guys that show on their own. One thing you'll find at Bonneville is there is no lack of "volunteers" that are more than willing to help. Lars Neilsen comes over on his own from Denmark. Like I said above when he arrived Joe and I became his instant crew. One year at El Mirage I was the chase car for a friend who runs a vintage BSA. And he was my chase crew. I got in line to run and he said he'd be back in a minute and took off. I was getting closer and closer to the start and no sign of Scott. Only a couple of guys ahead of me. Panic starting to set in. I pulled my truck out of line and figured I'll run and work out how to get back later. I spotted two guys looking over the sidecar. Aha!!! Two volunteers!! I asked them if the could chase me. "Sure". A quick rundown of what to do and off I went. Turned out the were two Swedish tourists who stopped at El Mirage to have a look. They got a bit more than they bargained for and had a good story to bring back to Sweden.

Whatcha got on paper? Paper doesn't go very fast on the salt. Start building and get out there. If you have any regrets in life, Bonneville won't be one of them.

Exactly...

I got to crew for Bobby Green with his belly tanker my first year there....all because I asked a question.

I ended up doing it the next few.

Mecca for gearheads.

Just show up with something to race and you will have more help than you need....ir or want in some cases.

I forgot that. Asking questions or even standing too close can cause you to become "instant crew". One of the very few places where you can get that close.

Very true. You can make a friend for life with a bottle of water.

Stuck for a crew? Not around here. They'll even provide shade while you wait.

And if you are lucky you ca achieve international fame with very little fortune. This was a French crew from last year. They are mainly talking about how the fastest guys (not me) are senior citizens.

I just looked at the starting date of this thread. I can't believe I'm still dicking around with the sidecar. The blower is on and running. Or it was for a while. I thought I had the blower pulley centered but it turned out I missed by about .010" and it was causing vibration. It caused the sprocket carrier nut to loosen and break its taper and shear the key. No big deal. I was just glad it did it on the driveway and not on the Start line at Bonneville.

I'm fortunate to have a friend who owns a machine shop, a bunch of bikes and is a huge enthusiast. Dave machined my sidecar wheel last year. I drew up a one piece spacer / blower pulley and bought a chunk of aluminum and headed to Dave's. He was busy and asked how much time he had. I said a couple of weeks. Everything else is ready. A couple of days later he calls to say its ready! The sprocket got chewed up and the replacement I got had a different roller profile. No problem for Dave. A quick phone call and a recut was arranged.

The pulley turned out great. Better than I imagined. I did a "dry" fit to make sure there would be no surprised. Now the Bonneville itch is starting. Hopefully the weather behaves itself and we can back on the salt and running.
