Yeah. Side to side is not always awful.

There is a spec on the side to side play. The up and down spec is almost ZERO. I don't have it handy but it is in the .001 to.0015 range. Old school test is is you can feel it move up and down, it is worn out.

If you can feel up and down play by hand it's time to rebuild the crankshaft.

Checking by side movement at the rod small end is 3/32'' as the limit.
note; Check in several crank shaft positions. Most notably in the 180 degrees after top dead center on both rods.
