After watching TroyFab's build, and his 'shark fin' removal i decided i REALLY liked that look, and so i did it on my engine as well, but i also went a little further and cut off the top section of the cover AND the outer transmission housing. I rounded it all out and blended the housing to where it looks factory. I'm stoked about how it all came out, looks kinda like pre-unit in a way.

Stock Example:

Post up some pics as you go with one of them.\

You got bikes, or are you in starting stages of a build or 2 or 3?

got some more work done last night on the 'hot rod' motor. Finally tracked down a lay shaft 3rd gear (hard to find 5 spd parts) and got the transmission all put back together, new bearings throughout. Also did some more fat trimming. I am retro-fitting (this is a 71 tr6) earlier style cam wheels to some Megacycle cams to go in this engine, and decided that they needed to lose some weight.

Stock timing gear set, thick and bulky

Earlier (68) timing gears, on a diet.

tag/tail light mount done, coil mount done, battery box done. Pics.

*fender fits nicely, but wheel has no bearings and is not sitting straight at all.

thanks. layed out a pattern, made a jig to hold them true in the drill press, and then just rotated the gear in the fixture to keep spacing the same.

I don't know how I missed this thread a month ago, but I actually did the same shark fin removal a couple months ago for the same reason, I like the look of it a little better without the filler. The weird thing is that even though I'd seen the bottom fin cut off I thought I was the only one rocking the shaved top fin and inner cover! I just pulled the timing gears out this morning and was thinking about drilling those out. Got a picture of the jig you used? I just want to make sure I get it perfect. Looks like you got a bit of work ahead of you! Good luck!

chippin' away at things still...

got the bottom end of this motor back together (hope to be picking up the fresh cyl. barrels tonight) and then on to the top end. Got a seat pan made up (NATE!), still gotta make some mounts. Just couldn't leave well enough alone and ended up cutting the pipes down some. Got a rear mount made for the exhaust last night. Got all the old exhaust mounting shaved off, forward controls are shaved off. I don't know, there is a CHANCE still....

Been hammering away on this thing so its absolutely ready for the road if i EVER get my cylinders back.

*Got a new kickstand made, and miraculously found my old block, got it all welded up and back on, works great.

* Got the seat mounted, scored some Ford valve springs from a greybeard up the road. Made the pivot, etc.

* Started on my 'new mids' I made forwards for the bike when i first built it, they looked like hell, i cut them off. Soo... i machined a piece of round stock to accept a worn cam bushing, and welded that to my motor mount, and then machined a shaft to fit the bush. I used an old Ironhead brake lever, which is about the right length, and havent decided if i will utilize the ears on the Harley part, or make an 'ear' on the back side of the shaft like a stock triumph. Bent up some round bar to make the foot peg as well, its about an inch and a half longer than stock, and super comfy! Obviously a bunch of cleanup and finish to do yet, but i'm pretty happy so far.

Got some more work done on the Quickee, got an electrics/battery box sorted out, and mounted, which meant i could finish cleaning up the frame and paint it. Pics aren't the best, but its raining and i was in a hurry. Dude is on a budget so paint is just Duplicolor Red Anodize, with some Fire Red lines here and there.

Also got the tank and fender painted up, semi gloss black w/ Fire Red & Metallic Silver.

This is for this bike:

Controls roughed out, still got a bunch of clean up work, and gotta make some pegs still. These sit about 2 inches forward of stock mid mount pegs.

Cut out a plate/taillight bracket out of 16 guage, and then a support bracket out of 3/16 plate, which will bolt under the frame to flush mounted bungs. The mount is tapped for the plate bolts. I'm gonna add a small reinforcement at the bend where the light is supported to help fight the vibes.

Got my cylinder head back (man, kinda forgot how rough shape it was in!) pulled the valves to find that 2 of them were bent (badly), and got the old guides knocked out. Started cleaning out all the carbon and junk. Made a new top motor mount because i just wasn't feeling the other one that i had made.

can't wait to get that Cobb intake from Olddaze, it should be the crown jewel for a purdy top end!

Started hacking up the Magneto last night. here are a few pics of the stock mag body.

At this point i have already removed the drive gear and impulse unit. I then cut off the slotted mounting tab, as well as all of the body material that housed the drive gear. I probably could have used this one as is/was, but wanted to get the mag tucked in as close as possible, so it met the grinder. I will be chucking it up in the mill tomorrow to get the mating surface perfectly flat. I will be re-welding the mounting tab to the body as shown in the pics. As it sits now, its about 1/4" taller than a Hunt mag would be.

If you know your narrowglides you know whats going on here, if not, i shaved the 'accessory mounts & welded the bolt holes shut, and then shaved all the casting marks, knocked off the fork stops. Its looking better, little more cleaning and some gloss black will do the trick.

and a couple pics of the Intake and overall motor shots

thanks, i am making an adapter plate, basically the same as a Hunt set-up, but with the mounting locations to work with the Wico. I am buying the Hunt cam taper and support bearing, and will then mill the magneto output shaft into a hex to work with the Hunt cam taper. Pics will be coming, it prolyl won't make sense till you see it.

Made it down to Front St. Cycle this weekend and had Craig bend me up some new frame rails. Got it all done except the backbone/seatpost bend, i'm stoked on how it came out so far.

Got my jig back from a friend who had borrowed it.

Started on some new axle plates, w/extra beef. I should have the slots milled out tonight.

pipe fitting in the old neck, lol

Got my lower motor mount bungs coped last night. Gonna throw the frame rails up in the mill tonight and drill the holes to make sure they are nice and square.

Started figuring out what i'm gonna do for the rear motor mounting, gonna use some DOM from the backbone out, and then slugged with some pieces i turned on the lathe, these will be tapped for the 1/2" bolts to hold the plates on.

And just a couple pics of my high tech chopping equipment

Line drive drill press

Line drive lathe

Finished up the rear motor mounting last night, coped the other piece of DOM and welded in a gusset.

Got the lower rails drilled for the motor mount through bolt.

Started eyeballing things.

Axle plates slots have now been cut and lower rails are clamped in the jig, downtube is tacked in, everything is looking really good, i'll get some more pics tonight.

Picked up the beltdrive last night and gave it a quick clean up. Its the MAP version w/ alloy basket and sealed bearing as well as alloy pressure plate and ball bearing clutch rod, belt is in good shape, bearing is good, and i also got a primary cover out of the deal. Primary cover had a big hole cut in it so you could see the pressure plate spin, but i decided i wanted to see a bit more... and the brass nuts that i got from Trumpnut really tie it all together.

Picked up a ragged set of Fork Covers at the swap over the weekend for $10, not sure if they are homemade or what. Gonna have to enlarge the top for the tubes to pass through (i'm lacking about 1mm clearance). Diggin the look though!

haha! hadn't noticed that at all.... the 'shorter' one is trimmed to proper length and the other is as i got it. Anybody have any idea as to the origin of these things? The taper at the top doesn't look quite right to be OG or MCM.

Machine shop says another 'couple weeks' for my crank & cyl. barrel.... gay!!! i wanna get this damn thing back together already!

Frame is painted (for now), and got the fork covers sorted and mounted. Forks and front wheel are mounted for real now. Starting to get everything fitted properly while I wait for my crank and such. Changing up the pipes a bit more, knew i was gonna have to cut them down a couple inches to clear my taillight/tag mount, and in the process decided that i kinda liked them turned down instead. Bars are just for mockup, only 7/8 bars i have right now...

Fender is mounted, sissy is mounted, got my bars from Craig, and got the controls fitted. Went and picked up my crank and cyl. barrel from the machine shop (they had them since June and hadn't touched them yet...) and took 'em to another place (that just did valves and seats on my head) so i hope to have all that back in a couple weeks so i can actually get this fucker on the road.

Got to work on my 'new' mids this weekend, pretty much a direct copy of what i already made, just some little tweaks. Started with some nice 90deg bends that craig did up for me, and then made pieces in the lathe for the mounting bits. Triumph con rod bushing, inserted in some DOM for the pivot, and a clevis i had hangin around. Nice and tight, feel good, look good, simple.

Timing/shift side. Will be using a stock shift arm.

Primary/brake side.

Still moving forward, got the other rocker box assembled, and the new small end bushes pressed into the con. rods. Got my cylinder back, and painted it up. Also got some of my magneto stuff back from my buddy doing the machine work. He's gotta finish up the adapter shaft and its ready to go. *Hopefully* the correct main bearing shows up today and i can really get this show on the road.

Six pages later, all I can say is...Great work, inspiring ideas, and I'll be checkin' in to see how it all comes together. -Murdoc.

Bout got the motor rebuild done, gotta set the valves and time the mag, finish plumbing and tie up a couple other loose ends, but its getting REALLY close, (and I promise the sporty tank is NOT staying)

nope, thats a 35mm Narrowglide, and some swap meet 33mm covers of unknown origin, i had to open up the tops a bit to get 'em over the tubes, but no mods to the bottoms.

Bike ran great all summer, put about 6K on it.

Pulled it off the road a couple weeks ago to get ready for the Timonium Bike Show in MD Feb 10-12. Stripped to the bare frame and decided to make a couple small changes before i started painting and plating everything.

new lower fender mounting. These are all counter-sink bungs for socket head cap screws, just didn't have any laying around at the minute.

new top oil tank mount.

here you can see all of the new mounts, including the middle fender mount.

Started on a new sissy bar last night. Its 5/8 rather than 1/2 like the old one, and its about 3 inches taller. Not sure about it yet, think its a little too big/bulky. Prolly go back to 1/2" and only go 1.5 inches taller than the old one.

Progress/work being done on the old trumpet! Got the engine tore out of the frame and partially dis-assembled. Since the pic, i have gotten the trans/clutch all tore out and ready to open up the cases.

Plans:

Check sludge trap> just for peace of mind, and a benchmark. I know i've got 6K+ on the engine and just want to see how full it is/how often i will need to clean it.

Repair head> had a couple guides loosen up, so new guides and a fresh valve job

Repair transmission> Started having some major shifting problems. Going to convert from leaf spring shift indexer (2 year only) to plunger style. Also have some work to do on the lay shaft. Will be replacing with the 'newer' style (again, 2 year only part). Will also be replacing a couple gears and bushings. Hope to get all the trans gremlins out this time.

Will give the cylinders a quick hone and some new rings, that end all looks good (other than the oil that was getting past the guide on the primary side)

Love the tight turns on that frame you made up. Was wondering what tube bender you use for that.

Dan.

i'll do my best to document the plunger conversion.

layshaft details to come. Long story short, i've got the early layshaft (non circlip) and will be changing to the later (t140 w/circlip). Also have a couple gear bushes to replace. I had bent the mainshaft, and never bothered to really check out the layshaft (which now i'm thinking was probably bent at the same time. Need to get a dial indicator on it and confirm.)

JD Squared Model 32. I don't remember what centerline radius i used though...

cases split, sludge trap pulled. 15-20% full, looks like this will be a 20K regular service.
