Default Sportster Help!!

So Fellas, here's the deal. The bike is an 04 sporty that I'm working on for a friend and the bike is leaking from the shift arm. I went and got the replacement seal but need advice on getting the old seal out?? Hopefully without having to remove the primary cover!! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!!

I have used a pick to pull the seal out without removing the primary cover.

Are these seals POS?? This bike has like 850 miles on it?? What type of pick did you use to remove the seal? Was it a nightmare or does it come out fairly easy? Thanks!

You can drill to small holes on each side of the shaft and insert some self tapping sheet metal screw into those holes and remove the seal with pliers.

My bad. I thought there was shoulder on the front of the primary cover holding those in.

My bro in law had the exact same leak, also a low milage late model Sporty, so it must be a pretty common problem... his is an '03.

Yeah, just wanted to see if the seal is able to be pulled easily before I take everything apart.....path of least resistance I guess?

+1 this is the best way period to get this seal out, just make sure to stay away from the outer edge in which the seal sits against... when putting new seal in make sure to tape up the shaft with elect. tape and apply a bit of oil to tape so the new seal will slide over it nicely and wont rip, socket and hammer to set the seal in.

Ha I am getting ready to replace mine this morning. Like Jason43 said ealier in the thread, mine is an 04 with low miles and it has the same problem. Must be some sort of defect. Next weekend i have to replace the axle seal on my 4Runner. Why can't stuff just not leak? Bah.
