Equus electric tach. The bike crosses the finish at an indicated 7300 rpm in high gear at 125 with 4.66 overall gearing.

I never had luck with tachs, anybody knows a tach that can pick-up signal from a mag?

The 8000 rpm Equus tach I use works with 1-12 cylinders and does have an external inductive pick up like a timing light. But it does need a 12 volt power source and wrapped in foam to protect against vibration.

I talked to Dave about that set up, he sent me one, you still need a external battery. I did try it, but the tach that i used was erratic and on a race bike like mine it was just too much stuff. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks Blown CBR, this looks like a compact & simple solution, I like it! Did you run it on a magneto?

Mine is a Stewart-Warner. Its the only one I found that works on a single. Requires a battery though and being digital its a bit difficult to see. I have to change the mounting angle.

It has a black that just wraps around a TH lead astek, one wire, nothing to connect, internal battery, Iv'e had one for years, just sits on a shelf gathering dust these days,, the only trouble I has was it read 1/2 the rpm is should have, so I halved the red line too

Hi all, El Mirage is this weekend. Who is coming? I am bringing two bikes;
I will see if i can get the 145.979 mph "Tatro Machine Special" fuel record from 1995.
I believe this is the fastest 650cc pushrod record on a naked bike?

The best of luck Alp. Keenan's record will be a tough nut to crack. He wasn't afraid of nitro and ran it in fair amounts. I won't be there. My right knee is causing a lot of trouble right now. But I'll be rooting for you.

Thanks Bill, sorry about your knee! I hope it is nothing serious and you can be back for November's meet.

It has been 19 years and his record is still in the books, definitely a tough one to get.

Tatro bike looks like half a Sportster engine....Man.that's an old record.. Alp,will your engine be burning something other than gasoline? How long is the El Mirage run, 1.3 miles?
Good luck!

Actually my engine is set-up for alcohol/nitro, ignition timed accordingly. The entire engine is aluminum with dual GP carbs, fuel supplied by two matchbox floats. I made custom size jets. I do not want to lean out, they say with nitro, when something is wrong the aluminum melts.
Yes, it is 1.3 miles.
I need luck! Thank you.

Alp, What did keenan run for the 650 record? When I raced with him he had the "half a Harley" as a 500. I spent a couple of seasons chasing his gas record without success. And watched him waste a bunch of motors trying to run 150 with a 500. He also ran a flathead Harley in the vintage class I never realized he ran in the 650 class.

He has two records in the 650 classes, I don't know what he was running.

The engine wasn't running fine, I stopped around 105mph, The aftermarket steel magneto gear was causing problems, I replaced it with a stock fiber one.

The M frame bike went 126 on a 129 aps-vg record. I couldn't get to run more than once this time.

I dissasembled the whole bike/engine. All looks ok except the magneto gear.

I saw the results last night on the SCTA site. Good run with the vintage bike. Hard luck on Keenan's record. He set some tough ones. What were you running for fuel? Going to give it another shot in Nov.?
