Question European specs for frame tube

Hello all,

I am looking for equivalent European tubing specs, for tube to build a frame with with.
Or actually Dutch specs, if there is any difference.
I know Americans (and other English speaking countries) usually use DOM 1020. Or ERW. Or CDS.
But what do Europeans use?

From what I have heard, DOM is not officially sold in the Netherlands. So, what do I look for? It seems rather difficult to find any comparing specs or info. Might be nice if this thread could help out in that aspect.

Any (European builders) have any idea /tips to help me in my search?
Thanks in advance!

If the seller doesnt know what DOM tube is just ask him about tubes that are drawn over mandrel welded with electro resistance process or seemless...try to describe it but in my experience(i'm from Europe) most shops that are in steel business know what DOM is.

Regarding to steel ID, 1020 is ANSI and you can tell the seller that. They should have a chart that has different name standards for steel. In EU we have DIN, ISO and EN 10027-2. If they dont know how to help You after You talk to them with all this info then go buy somewhere else because that means they dont know their business

Generally, every basic seemless tube is good for use in building frames beacause they come in better quality then your regular ERW tubes.

Hope I helped!

Hello Fiki,

Thanks for your reply. I called two (big) companies today. Both of them told me they weren't familiar with DOM 1020...
Guess I'll have to try a few other ones... Seems like they are more helpful in your neck of the woods!

You might have been asking the wrong person.
Try a smaller supplier.

I think maybe you're just wording it differently from what they expect...

Try asking for the size you want, DOM tubing, 1020 steel. As in

"40mm round DOM tubing, in ANSI 1020 steel"

Sometimes I wish I could just add a 'thumbs up' or a 'like' to these replies that are just well worded, sound expert and helpful. But then I think that would be gay and nerdy so for now I just respond with this compliment.

There are different material standards over there, for basically the same thing.
They might not don't use the AISI designations, most of us are familiar with.

A search on matweb.com for 1020 turns up these as key words:
UNS G10200, AMS 5032, AMS 5045, ASTM A29, ASTM A108, ASTM A510, ASTM A519, ASTM A29, A108, A510, A512, A513, A519, A544, A575 M10120, A576, A635, A659, A827, A830, BS 970 040A20, 050A20 (En2C), 050A20 (En2D), 060A20, BS 970 Part 1 070M20, DEF STAN95-1-1 C1020, SAE J412, SAE J414, DIN 1.0402, AFNOR CC 20, UNI C 20, SS14 1450 (Sweden), SAE J403

Efunda.com show this for AISI 1020:

France: AFNOR CC 20
Germany: DIN 1.0402
Italy: UNI C 20
Sweden: SS 1450
United Kingdom: B.S. 040 A 20 , B.S. 070 M 20
United States: AMS 5032 , AMS 5032B , AMS 5045 , AMS 5045C , ASTM A108 , ASTM A29 , ASTM A510 , ASTM A519 , ASTM A544 , ASTM A575 , ASTM A576 , ASTM A659 , MIL SPEC MIL-S-11310 (CS1020) , SAE J403 , SAE J412 , SAE J414 , UNS G10200

In the Netherlands look for:
Stoompijp-thick walled
Naadloos getrokken hoge druk hydrauliekpijp for thinner stuff.

Pm me if you want more details. I have a good supplier near you.
