You start out in the theoretical, then as the miles pass the bike (and rider) gradually rub off the rough spots, shed the unneeded parts, and add the important ones. Eventually, time and miles hone both into the very essence of what's needed to reliably go down that long road, just like in the old days. But for me, esthetics play almost no role here. Pure practicality is what inspires me...

I am by no means a master. I do my best to pay attention to the bike, tap into it's true essence, and allow it to come through. As I drift off to sleep and as I wake up ideas show up, maybe from dream land.

Often times what inspires me is some random object.

Riding.

Flashbacks.

Too often, in this day and time, inspiration is found (and sought) starting with this common request:

"Anybody got pics of___________"......."post pics of how you did_______".

That's a lot like what I do. I have by far more fun designing/building a bike than I do riding it. Usually I just start with one item, and I borrow from my store of ideas I've had swirling around for awhile in my head and start building. The bike itself will tell you if something isn't right for it. Sometimes you'll think of a part to go on it that is amazing, you take all this time to make it just right, then you put it on the bike and it says, "nope, not gonna happen."

Influence comes from all over, now mainly the net...
Inspiration comes from pure abstration... ride in everyday road like its the first time.
"Cathalictic" factor provided by the memories from the bike shop next door when I was 5 and draw in a paper my first bike ...

I find I build it 3-4 times in my head first. Have been known to wake up at night and sketch or write something down to remember tomorrow how I wanted it to look. Just start building and don't doubt your ideas keep going it might take just the last piece before it all comes together in your head. And build it for YOU not what you think others will like dislike ext its an expresion of what YOU like to hell with everyone else.

Side valves help with the process they are just good to look at!

Bingo!.. I agree 100% . Sit, stare, Imagine, and it will all come out. As a very good friend of mine told me years ago... Turn off the TV, stop staring at Magazines, and for God sakes turn off the news.. let your mind clear and and it will all happen on its own. And if he reads this he knows who he is..

Be your own inspiration..
