Default Do all Ultima Transmissions have a sloppy feel at the shifter?

A friend of mine has a nice chop and it was built with mostly brand name stuff, but he skimped on the transmission and went with an Ultima 6 speed. The shift lever flops around and takes about 4 inches of throw to shift up or down. Is this normal, and is it something that can be adjusted from the trap door access?

It kinda feels like the springs are really weak in the detent mechanism?

Just a note....I am not talking about the clutch lever or clutch adjustment, I am talking about the shifter at the transmission itself. I checked both heim joints and they are tight, and tightened the loose shifter lever at the forward control ( it was loose)

The shift lever at the transmission is tight also. It definitely feels like an issue inside the tranny or maybe a trait of the Ultima trans?

I hope one of you chopper gurus can shed some light on this for me. I could really use the knowledge.

I have one and the throw is really tight on mine, the trouble i have with mine is that I can rarely ever find neutral with my foot, I just about always have to reach down and get it with my hand, and i dont think I have ever had that much trouble with any bike ive owned or rode.

Finding neutral is usually easily remedied by a properly adjusted clutch with some premium synthetic somewhat lighter weight than usual trans oil.

I have had that issue before on various Big Twin transmissions.

Thanks for the feedback on your Ultima trans...

not commenting either way on the quality of the trans, but what you said above makes me think something is jenky w/ the controls (like a home built or mismatched set that don't have the right ratio and/or sloppy linkages and bushings), or it's handshift and it's got some oversized handshifter on it that's wreaking havoc?

Otherwise, if you are sure it's not the clutch, just pull the trans and take the top off to see what might be going on.

that said, I have had an Ultima 4 spd, although it was before Midwest started branding them "Ultima". There was some bind in a starter gear bushing, but other than that, it was setup pretty well and trouble free. And I'm sure some guys run them w/ no problems and some probably have had problems.

I have what they use to call a Chrome Horse, pre Ultima, tranny and it is so nice compared to a stock rachet top but it is the one with Andrews gears.

I am happy with it.
