Default Side mount license plates in Cal

I have a friend and a customer of our shop that is a cop, he said as of January 1, 2011 cops in California have been instructed to write tickets on all side mounted vertical license plates. the new law is plates have to be 16" off the ground and easy to read which means in the "normal" horizontal position, this ticket is an "equipment violation" but with the court assessment fees it will cost you approx. $200.
I got a helmet ticket this week and the cop told me the plate had to be mounted to the rear fender, now since he was only writing me for the helmet I wasn't going to argue the point with him, the D.O.T. approved Harley Nightster has a side mounted plate that is legal under federal guidelines.
These tickets are nothing more than a revenue generation tactic by the state and local governments. that helmet ticket will cost me $187.00.
Watch out guys, cops are looking hard at bikes now for mufflers, lights/horn, front fender and front brake, these equipment laws are really going to be enforced in an effort to balance the state budget.

I am constantly jealous of you turkeys in Cali. Always having the big shows, cruises, rides...and then I read this stuff. Im very happy here in the "Sticks" in Gainesville GA...I dont even have to pass emissions here on my hotrods....let alone blinkers and horns on my bike.

Sorry fellas, it sucks for ya'll....

Although I'm on the east coast, that really bugs the fuck out me.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. What happens in California usually spreads to the rest of the nation.

Sounds like the revenue making scam they pulled in Indiana. For over 50 years the handlebar height law stated 15 inches above the saddle. The Man started writing tickets for apes on the old law. For our safety mind you. There were stock bikes from the factory that were illegal by definition. When it was brought to the legislators attention that sportbikes with handlebars way lower than 15" were statisticly more dangerous we were able to have the law effective 7-1-10 changed to shoulder height or lower. I wish you California riders the best of luck. I see this as just another reason to be involved with making sure your rights aren't being taken away from you.

There's a big difference between what you read on the news/web and what happens on the street. Ride like an a-hole and you'll get harassed for just about anthing they can think of. I've been riding in this beautiful state for nearly 20 years averaging 15K miles per year, (no blinkers, non-stock pipes, no horn, lack of epa equipment, etc) and I have yet to get an equipment violation. I don't ride like grandpa but I'm not blasting through residential areas at 2 am.

Amen to that. I always sweat a bit when I notice a cop on my ass, but more often than not, they'll pull past me and nod or give a thumbs up. SD cops are way more chill. As long as youre paperwork is in order and you're not riding like an asshole, the cops around here don't bother you.

If you must ride like an asshole, remember this- Evading a police officer is not illegal, but getting caught evading a police officer is.

Wait until Jerry Brown is sworn in, if you think its bad now. you'll probably be restricted to Parades only unless you have an electric motor. The greenies will be coming out of the woodwork!

I was told Florida was doing the same. I am going to bike week this year and was going to take my 49 pan but it has a side mount also. Can the florida guys tell me if this is true?

They are always trying to get something out of us here in Calif. Our state is really in trouble if they think shit like this will help bail them out. Maybe we just need bigger government here to tell us what we can ride and help us with our paint jobs. It's coming!

Yeah thats about right, vote no on prop 19 which would have generated over 14 billion dollars a year.. And rely on bullshit tactics like this for revenue?
Typical fuckin Government bullshit... EPA wont even exist in 10 years.. Florida has the same law... Here in NY they tried that shit for a week, pulled my bro over for loud pipes, fucker was driving the opposite direction with his windows up on a city street going 30 MPH... Bro was on a softail with Vance and Hines pipes, and he rides like a grandma.. When the rookie cop saw my bros name and realized my sister owns the bar that he drinks at, and drives home from every weekend, he let him go... Fuckin rookie... He was told by the other PO's not to fuck with the bikers around here.. We are pretty lucky.. Most of the local cops are cool... Depends on where you are.. And it ALWAYS depends on how you act when pulled over.. Yes sir, no sir.. That shit works.. Makes them feel like they are important..

Back in '08 FL made vertical tags illegal. In '09 C. Crist signed SB1100 which reversed this (effective June 16, 2009). See FL statute 316.2085(3) for current tag requirements.

i wish they would focus on real crime like the scum bags that are murdering people, selling meth to kids, robbing old people, oh and giving them selves HUGE payrolls while working for the city. I think they may also need the extra money soon after that family in LB sues for the killing of the guy with a hose.

BUT LEAVE US PREDOMINATELY (I think we all ef off here and there when no ones looking) LAW ABIDING CITIZENS ALONE!!!
