Default Insurance w/ No Odometer in CA!!

Hello,

So I picked up a '66 FLH a week or two ago. It is a streamlined flh in an og swingarm frame with no speedo, some call it a "swingarm chop" I called my insurance (AAA) to add it to the policy but they asked to swing by to take photos for the insurance policy. After they realized there was no odometer they refused to insure the bike. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid adding an odometer or possibly a better option than AAA that doesn't require this in CA? Thanks in advanced!

I have a old Drag specialties speedo with a neat one bolt mount.

I put it on every bike I get for inspection and run a piece of black rubber hose to it and tuck it under the tank.

oddly....many of the bikes I've ever registered in the last 10 years has 1640 miles on it.

Was thinking the same hopefully they approve it! Its pretty weird how the insurance chooses which bikes they want to have pictures of for their record. I have a couple of other older bikes that they've never asked for photos of but cool thanks!

TrailTech makes speedo's used on trail and enduro bikes. Might even find a model that "fits" your build and keep it?

Bicycle speedometers work. Mine has been working for almost 40,000 miles
Do a search, there are a couple discussions on here

You may want too read the policy after you get it, not having the speedo may make the policy invalid.

Bingo, just what I would do. I may not live in CA but here, we have an annual test (MOT) you guys have a similar test I think. Anyway, the speedo is not a testable item so you can, and I have had a bike passed with no speedo but if I get stopped by the cops I would get a fine. Just sayin'.

I like the post saying check your insurance wording, they would have to be pretty specific if they listed the need for a speedo in there but if you do bolt one on, take a pic, get your insurance and then take it off I am sure this will make your insurance invalid as they offered you a policy with a speedo clearly in the picture.

How about mounting a speedo out of sight? I have seen them mounted in many places, hell it wouldn't even have to work, but just be there.

I've had my motorcycles with Drive insurance from Progressive in CA since 1999, never had to submit photos or odometer readings...no issues.

state inspection is one thing. even less on a classic/vintage bike. you may need a speedo.

for an ins co the only reason i could see them wanting one is not for your safety but how to rate(charge) your policy.
besides your age, driving record, price of car/bike, how many accidents and other factors most insurance co also want to know how many miles(approx) you put on per year. and that will factor into what you pay.
when i told my ins co that my wifes DD was less than 3000 miles a year they thought i was lying to keep my payment down. she works from home. theve havent asked me again in 10 years.

like others said put on one for the picture visit and i bet youll never have to show them again.
