Default S&S Manifold on a Shovel

The snow has left Sweden and its long over due to start riding.
But my 76 Shovel have had problem idling and often backfired and shutdown.

So after a test drive last week I sprayed some starter fluid on the intake rubber. And id just died directly!.
So I ordered some new rubber bands thinking I had newer heads.

Today I took of the carb.

This is what I found!!
Some mechanic have mixed up parts.

Is there some shade tree way to solve this?
At least temporary so I can get it the yearly inspection
Or do I have to buy a new manifold?

Any Indy will have the little "rings" that take up the slack for the oring style heads...I hate 'em tho.
Wondering just which clamp the PO used??
Best bet is to get the correct Manifold. and The correct Clamps.
Solid clamp is for O-rings...and split clamp is for Rubberbands.
Using the correct shit will solve lots of Problems!

Edit; BTW someone will surely trade you Manifolds since the Mismatch is Fairly common...Sadly.

plus 1 on the incorrect manifold - your heads are o ring and the manifold is flat ring ( rubber band ) type - post it as a swap or run around to all the shops and see if they will swap if not buy one, the o ring type and sell the other

...and as a temporary bodge, think it was from Easy Riders many moons ago, wrap electrical tape over seal then clamp. Can't imagine what FUBAR mess it will be once the ethanol gets at it though; but it will 'get you home'.

Here's hoping your already home!!! But, I generally still take a wrap of electrical tape over the O-ring when installed...Old Habits Die Hard!
And Yes...It is a Hell of a Mess when disassembled...And Probably ain't necessary either!

Wide teflon tape is great for that, no sticky mess.

If you have a lathe jam that manifold onto a piece of pipe and cut O-ring grooves. For a small minute when those first came out guys thought they were better and would run rubber bands on the o-ring manifold ,just placing the rubber band over the groove and using the runbber band clamp. I could get you an aluminum H-D manifold for 10 bucks. { you need to know that your barrells are stock length and no stroker plates]

But...a stock HD manifold is not the bore size of an S&S...unless it is Not for an S&S carb. Which the 158 is!

Well, that would depend which S&S carb you have.

Adaptor kits: Custom Chrome 040351 / Mid USA 82903. Less than $10.00 a pop. I'm sure Drag Specialties and others make them too. They're not as good as the right manifold, but I've used them and they work.

Dave,
Good tip!
I've used that trick for cleaning up and re-facing manifolds. Find a piece of pipe close to the right size and turn down the O.D. so it's a tight slip fit into the manifold and you can then chuck it up. I suppose an expanding mandrel of the right size would be the correct tooling, but I don't have all that good shit, so I make do with what I have. Just make sure it's mounted up securely, you don't want to get your teeth knocked out by a flying manifold .

Geo.
