Default Baffles to quiet down my pipes

I was wondering what kind of baffles guys are running that are good for sound and if they help with performance that would be a plus too. My pipes on my Panhead are way way too loud. Even after I welded in a set of 4 inch baffles. I need to quiet it down a lot since they shoot up directly in the air. I ride very early in the morning and want to quiet them down a lot, but still sound good just not so obnoxious.

Those baffles you have you can get them much longer
I buy long ones bolt them in then keep cutting down until I'm happy.
cheap and easy.
Maybe it seems loud as pipes are exiting by your head?(or you got complaints?)

A friend of mine has made disks inside his pipes that he controls in open / closed position by wire and an old chock handle. So he can quite down at will even while riding. Its much lika a carb buttefly valve. Home brew and easy to conseal.

Many years there were discs like this for sale, called Snuff or Nots. Haven't seen ads for them for years. I believe they were spring loaded to keep them in the desired setting.

Snuff or nots.... I like that. Maybe my friend made them after looking at old adds. His are spring loaded but I would consider using the stiff wire for controls. They are best of both worlds.... quiet in the mornings and loud and rude in the evenings.... or when desired anyways. I'll have to ask him about them next time I see him this summer.
Great when pulled over as well!

Hey jessee,

Maybe not period correct n all that, but possibly a good alternative:

From what I understood: from loud to quiet at the touch of a button.

Or for performance...Glass packed mufflers???
Cocktail shakers with a Glass packed [straight thru] baffles sound/look good to my ear/eye...and nothing outperforms a real exhaust system...
Unless of course you're Drag Racing...

I tried the short internal baffles on my shovel and didn't really notice a difference sound-wise. I wonder if you could wrap the outside of them in steel wool of pink fiberglass if you're concerned about volume.
