50 Pan project.. lots of pics

Heres various pics of my panhead project. I know what yer thinkin. Whys he got a tranny in the early pics, but not the late pics? yea... traded for a precision tig 185. So it goes. Got another one I just havent put it in yet.

as far as the front end goes. I'm gonna be using it after some modification. I'll also be using my 18 inch star hub wheel up front.

what else.. uhm.. frame was a bit tweaked as you can see. As it sits now its got a horseshoe oil tank. Ill put some more pics up as i take em

It started as a rebuild of my 69 and somehow over a good bit of time i ended up pretty much changing everything selling most the parts of the 69 and somehow i ended up with this... Collected parts for a long time - actually started building in August.

I'm using a 16 in the rear and an 18 in the front. I love how they turned out, but they were a huge pain in the ass! I got one hub for free and one for $20 so I thought I was gonna get over cheap, but after spokes, rims, powder, and rebuild kits.. damn.. that shit adds up quick! Streetsweepers on here taught me how to lace and true em and let me borrow his truing stand so at least they didnt cost me anything in labor.

They are just the loops. They actually suck pretty hard donkey dick if you look at em up close. Theyre not even straight. Someone else did em along with the floor board mounts and crossover tube and various other shit and every single thing he did will have to be redone. everything is crooked, or whatever. And this guy was supposed to be an expert at frame restoration.

Thats what I get for hiring out labor! Always get burned!!!

Heres a few mock up picks. I get discouraged one day and slapped stuff together and played make believe that I had a motorcycle I could ride.

After the mock up I took out the motor to remove the dicked up footboard tabs. Waiting for the parts to come in to reinstall them properly. Got hung up on making the controls until I get them...

The photo without the motor is with the tank nearly done and with the narrow glide front end clearanced for the star hub. Should be turning down the legs and cutting down the tubes in the next week or two.

The heads are freshly polished. Dont normally go that route, but since the cases and tranny were already polished when I got em I went with it!

God I hope so! I have to get it done quick because its in the ACO, but were headed out the door in a few short months! My pal is gonna have to ride it in to the SO for me.

Didnt think the wassel looked right. The bare metal sporty was just slapped together in 10 minutes. The black one is gonna be the doner for the final narrowed sporty.. that version was more just to see kinda how it would look

Magneto may be temporary. It needs a good going through, but im having clearance issues. I thought I had fixed it so I wouldent have to trim the cases by redrilling the base plate and adjusting the magneto body to face out instead of forward, but now I cant get a pushrod tube in... if I put it forward the relay boss is in the way. Shitty. If anyone knows a trick to not have to modify the cases let me know! Otherwise I may be shitcanning it.

I think this was true up until about a year and a half ago. I bet if we took a poll here on the board there would be a lot more people running peanuts than sporty tanks. I used to hate sportster tanks, now I kind of miss 'em! I think the tall sporty tank fits the apes on this bike better than the high tunnel peanut.

Havent thought about it yet. what they look like? Thought about velocity stacks, but my leg would block the air to the rear carb

As far as the tank goes. Seems people like both. Me too. I just think if I do the wassell i need lower bars if i keep the apes i need a taller tank. I played around with the idea of sort of friscoing the wassell, but its too fat in the back for that in my mind and the more i thought about what it was gonna take to change it to where i liked It i just started trying different stuff. I'm pretty happy with the narrow sporty sittin high. I think it suits the bike better. Lots less work too

Probably going to run something up off the engine case bolt thats between the cylinders. If not that then something off the top motor mount. Suggestions?

Fuel lines... I wanted to run two petcocks and two fuel lines, but that whole areas so busy now I think I might run one llike an then split it under the carbs..

Better bet would be to run two independent L shaped brackets using the cylinder base bolts. Advantages: 1) beefer mounting base (larger bolt and more surface area; 2) shorter brackets; 3) ability to remove each carb (and bowl) independently...

I'd stick with one line for sure, split into a Y near the carbs. One option would be to use metal line (steel, not copper) split into a Y, then use a short piece of rubber to each carb. If your skills are up to it, split the line into a Y further back and run steel all the way to each carb. No leaks, less worry about abrasion/heat. Split it further back to give you some wiggle room when pulling only one carb.

One last thing: can't tell from the picture how far back that divider in the intake goes, but if it's not too far (meaning the carb's input isn't differenciated too much), you might consider a progressive linkage for the carbs. Linkerts don't flow *that* much, so you don't really need it, but it could make tuning it a bit easier and increase your mileage a bit...

I like the idea. I've never done any hard lines before. Ill probably give it a shot once its completely done. I've got so many other things to do that take more time then I have that I dont wanna add it to the "right now" list, but time permitting Ill go for it.

I'm with ya on this one. There actually is no divider in the intake at all and the plan is to run a progressive linkage where im running idle to mid on the small rear carb (m61b) and mid range and up on both carbs - the front one being an larger M74b

He calls to tell me it arrived yesterday and today I got these pics via email. Hows that for turn around time?

its an 84 inch stroker built by truett and osborne. i was told one linkert would not be enough for the motor so I went with two! plus dual carbs are badass. the guy who built the manifold has had experience using them in the past on knuckleheads with good sucess. I aint worried about it other then the ass pain of getting it started the first time.

as for fire Ill be running a morris g5 magneto thats in the mail as we speak. Thanks blackcrown!

Thanks for the words fellas. Been back about a month now and I just started workin on it the other day. My wife and I are goin our separate ways, so I've been busy with that.

At any rate...

I clearanced the G5 body to fit my cases, while my buddy Cary welded on the tank. Mag fits, and tank is nearly done. Few touch ups and mounts and itl be done.

All I have to do before tear down for final is sort out some sorta exhaust brackets, weld on floor board tabs, and.. um thats about it I think. Final assembly is gonna be kind of a pain chasin down hardware cause I can never seem to plan properly.

I was gonna time in the G5 and adjust the pushrods, but i didnt put the keyway in when I put on the front pully. that and i dont know where it is.. so that will wait til later i suppose.

Thanks to all yall that supported me in various ways. this build took 2 deployments and a marriage, and it still aint done, so needless to say I'm anxious to get it finally done.
