From our in case you really give a shit department. Just finished the complete, and boy do I mean complete, this baby was trashed, rebuild on the engine thanks to Jesse from Dragstews. now starting on the frame I am going to "ATTEMPT", the fab kevins weld on hardtail with the factory repoped axle plates from taiwan tedds. but first I gotta finish my frame jig.

Yeah...I was just looking at good, stock swingarm frames the other day. Buy an aftermarket frame instead of hacking up something like that. They aren't exactly making any new ones, and some folks actually give a shit about being able to restore something to its original glory.
...and your pushrods need tubes. |

I dunno......if you want to hardtail it, I'd go for it.
If somebody needs a '71 swingarm frame for a resto, there were 12,000 or so other '71 FL/FLH/FX frames made they can use. |

I dont care what anyone says, drum brake swingarm frames are getting scarce.. later shovel frames, not as much.. but, as I said.. I wouldnt ruin that frame.
Hatchthehairy. Stick to "chopping" VLX/XS stuff.. NOBODY will say "dont cut up that"..

nothing witty to retort here. i just think it is funny everyone is getting all hell bent on saving swingarm frames as of late. a year ago today no one would have given two shits. now they are the next trend.

Not hating.. Personally, I have ALWAYS had the "dont fuck up a good swing frame" stance.. With the cheap options available for rigid frames on the market today, there is no sense in ruining an original part.. When that shit is gone, its gone. Even restored frames arent as cool as uncut, ORIGINAL stuff... imo.

but then you run into title issues with said bike. you are left with a special construction. maybe i just don't know the system well enough when it comes to this, but you are only allowed one special construction, right?

I kinda hate to see a cherry frame cut up too, but do what you gotta do. I can see a future market for stock rear sections for swingarm frames when folks start cutting off the add on hardtails. ;^) And you can get reproduction swingarm frames, just like you can get reproduction wishbone frames.
BTW, this is not the first time this has happened. Kinda a repeat of the late 70's/early 80's. And as far as no one caring, I flinched when Tony Bones cut up an early swingarm several years ago. Larry T

I agree. Don't cut an ORIGINAL frame....there are plenty of already "cut" frames available and fairly cheap. Buy one of them and add a weld-on hardtail or make as many revisions as you wish to a piece thats no longer "original".
