Great work Dan, thanks for posting an up date.
Looks great. Will standard dies fit your bender as well without much hastle?

Hey Lester, thanks for the comments. I have no idea if stock dies and followers are compatible with this bender frame but the whole thing about this is that die sets are a little pricey for the infrequent times I would use them.

Also making this stuff is a real challenge for me and when I get something to work right it's a whole lot more satisfying than spending money, that quite honestly, I just don't have.

I hear you on that. I checked die prices yesterday.... fairly pricey! I may join you on this project in the near future.

Hey Lester. It was fun to make and if you would like my computer design files I'm happy to send them over.

I will post a video of it in operation when it is finished.

Cheers, Dan

So this is now a working tool. I still have some finishing touches like making the degree markers but it gives a nice bend.

I want to say thanks to Lester for helping me troubleshoot after the first bend deformed and we worked out that there is some within creep bending going on along the length of the follower.

My first attempt at the follower looked like this, a single run.

This gave a flat along the outside edge of the bend as you can see from where it came out of the follower. Also as you can see the follower is running too close to the die.

Using a two part follower giving a gap in the middle for the tube to move solved this problem and now we have a nice even bend. The follower still needs to be cleaned up and fully welded but I didn't want to do this until I knew that it worked.

I've been watching this from the beginning, but I think this is the first comment I've posted about it. I've been very impressed all the way. It turned out great & that bend looks awesome. Stunning success !
Question: How long is the lever & how much effort does it take to operate?

I give that bender an A-plus with oak leaf clusters. Good work!

Wow guys, thank you so much for the comments. I didn't expect that.

I have to say that I am super pleased with this project and I never really knew if it would work or not until yesterday.

A point to make is that the equivalent setup would have cost me £800+ if I had bought it ready made. This cost me a total of £150. I did have some steel in already but only for the stand. All the material for the die and associated items and the laser cut stuff are in that price.

Also it was a load of fun making this.

Phlogisticated, the lever is 720mm long. There was no science behind choosing this length but it just felt right to me. I was bending 38mm x 2mm wall tube. It was easy enough to bend using just one hand on the lever so it was good to keep my other hand ready to move the ratchet bar up to the next slot.

Cheers guys, Dan.
