Default Intro - Triuph build complete, except...

Hello all,
I've been lurking forever and finally got my latest build done. However I'm having a problem with getting it to shift right. I'm pretty sure I don't have the indexing correct. My Haynes manual doesn't seem to be much help. I have searched this forum and have found some good info on indexing but not enough for me to get it right. Does anyone have detailed instructions with photos or illustrations? Thanks.

hey man - welcome to the board. that is quite a killer bike youve got there. nice work.

whats going on with the shifter that isnt right? is the clutch adjusted properly? its been a while since i had my trans cover off but i remember it being pretty straightforward.

i did a quick search over at the britbike forum & they confirmed my memory. when youre installing the cover, the shifter quadrant should be all the way down (just past 4th) so when you line up the shifter plungers, it engages in 4th gear. also remember you have to pull the kicker back a couple inches so the gear clears the inner trans cover when you take the cover off & put it back on. before doing all that though, id make sure the clutch is dialed in just right.

Dang nice bike! The gear indexing is a pain sometimes, but when you get it right you'll kick yourself when you see what you were doing wrong! My suggestion is pull the inner cover only far enough to release the selector then move one tooth at a time till all 4 gears can be selected.
There should be quite few threads on this subject, try the search button.
Good luck and welcome to the JJ

Johnny

Great looking bike. I hope mine turns out that good, but then again I am about a year away from getting it on the road. I want to make sure it is done the way I want it done.

No help on the shifting, but damn nice bike. Killer color scheme. Probably the only Triumph with forward controls on the face of the Earth that doesn't make me puke.

Heres the thread that got me going down the right track:
https://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=36018

I only had 2-4th gears, and alot of the advice these guy gave me helped a ton!

Handlebars are just standard Pro Taper motocross bars. I cut about 1.5" off of each side. The covers are both powedered and painted. I powder coated them first but didn't like the outcome so I just painted them. I used John Deere Blitz black paint, it is the best flat black hands down.

Some more info on my shift problem this a 72 motor with the 4 speed and leaf spring setup. The problem is I only have nuetral and I think 2nd gear. I think it is a simple trans timing issue but I have never owned a Triumph so this is all new to me. I found some good info on the britbike forum so when I get some time I will try that. Thanks everyone for the good words about my bike.
