Re: Ironhead. What would you do?
Many will argue you have the best iron head frame built - very similar to the factory XR frame that ended production in 1980. If you build it to its 1979 incarnation, then you'll have issues finding...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Thanks Hank. When I first started this project, I intended to build the same rolling chassis but with a warmed over ironhead engine. I started a post about it here and you mentioned your experience...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Thank you Patrick! I went to save this, and realized I already had it in the dark recesses of my computer but had completely forgotten about it. The rockers won't be my next sub-project, but will be...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Regarding the frame, based on a bunch of things, I'm sending my frame off to have the cast area removed, and reworked XR style with 26 degrees of rake and a lower neck. It'll handle much less like a...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Thanks. The rocker boxes were made from scratch by the guy I bought the heads and cylinders from. He put a huge amount of work into them. I can see there was a lot of welding and grinding involved....

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Patrick's post got me thinking, and then I saw these photos on the interwebs. These photos show an 1980-81 XL frame next to a factory XR750 frame (frame with cast neck is XL). The frames look...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
I should have mentioned the crank. I'm using ironhead flywheels and Evo rods, which as you mention are the same length as XR1000 rods. Same crankpin diameter, just 6.926" center to center as compared...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Thanks Patrick. It's an '81 frame - does that make any difference? I'm really hoping the 14" shocks and much shorter forks make it handle a bit less like a freight train. I got in touch with Keenan...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Nikasil has worked very well for Guzzis, though I have heard stories of it peeling off in early bikes. I had a '75 850T and the cylinder walls looked beautiful on it, with no signs of peeling. The...

Re: XL/XR hybrid mutt
Thanks Elektron. Yes, that's a Guzzi V11 LeMans. It runs great and does everything I ask of it because I don't mess with it. I change the oil, get it new tires occasionally, and leave it alone. It...

XL/XR hybrid mutt
Since I was bashing on the JJ in a recent thread, I thought I should contribute something. This is a project not typical of the JJ, but I hope you find it interesting. I've posted in an another forum...

This may be considered off-topic, but I don't think comments about a particular forum can be off-topic when posted on that forum. I agree that social media (Facebook, etc.) has strongly impacted many...

I was once one of the thousands, and occasionally one of the hundreds. I couldn't have said it better than Jason. I check back from time to time to make sure I'm not missing anything interesting....

This is the article that Ratso was referring to. Sorry for the less-than-ideal scanning. Keep clicking on the page to get to the next page, or something like that.

Re: Hunt magneto for '71 and up Sportsters
I wish there was a solid state, self-powered ignition available for the ironhead. There simply isn't. I've searched, but I'd love to be proven wrong. The two manufacturers listed by denisj don't list...

Re: Hunt magneto for '71 and up Sportsters
DenisJ - thanks for that. Your experience is what I was afraid of. Yes, there are plenty of ignitions better suited for this than a stone age magneto. They all require batteries, and I despise...

Re: Hunt magneto for '71 and up Sportsters
USCRA Supervintage (through 1972). I proposed a rule change that got accepted, making all 1000 ironheads eligible for the class.
Ratso - you are correct. I got the sag set but haven't ridden it...

Re: Hunt magneto for '71 and up Sportsters
Thanks. Oh, it will definitely shake parts, or at least try to. Lots of safety wire and loctite should keep me together. It's a vintage class roadracer that I was able to squeeze into the '72 and...

Re: Hunt magneto for '71 and up Sportsters
I agree that the 900 cover looks better. I read an old write up on here about adapting one to a later ironhead. It looked like more than I wanted to get involved in, or the write up made it seem that...
