Chrome is more expensive in most cases, and does not last as long. So, you see where I am going. Plus, nothing is 100% permanent. You can reverse the decision with little repercussion.

CE=Cycle Electric, brand name. And the best generator out there, and pricy. But on the HD gennies , you do have to flash/polarize them. So you are right to do yours, if they are HD.

Update. Flywheels were spaced to tight, motor sprocket shaft rollers were to tight, from new race that had never been honed to fit stock rollers. Two rocker shafts would lock up in rocker housings...
