I have to say that "I" have had great luck with 680 on cast. I have also had good luck with using old cast iron piston rings.

The problem with maintenance rod is that they don't have to list any...

I don't think you will have a warping problem on the rear mounts. I pre heat at 300. I keep a infra red temp gun handy to keep an eye on the heat differential. Don't be afraid to throw the cases back...

If your plans are to just use a motor mount fixture just to hold the frame in place while you do repairs/modifications, you could get away with 1/2" steel plate. I guess aluminum would be my last...
