Re: I need a voice of reason..

Two potential reasons behind the mystery occur to me . . .

1) The ironhead motor sites relatively high in the frame, requiring a taller backbone

2) The unit construction required moving the...

Re: Retorqued heads and bikes now running awful

To my eyes. . .

If valve lash is set in thousands of an inch, then changing the stack height of the cylinder and head assembly by re-torquing the head bolts would definitely have a noticeable...

Re: I need a voice of reason..

I second that emotion.

Those bolt-on sportster hardtails look like shit. Angles are all wrong.

To say nothing of damaged spines and broken parts.

Fuck reason.

Impulse is an invitation.

Hopefully you've already bought it.

Hey Jim,

Here's a profile pic for you if you're gonna be posting here . . .

Re: Lets get the record straight, LOWBROW.

I loved bowling as a kid, and AMF made it happen.

I like Harleys too.

Much more skeered of green-horn ham-fisters fucking up an old bike than I am of disgruntled line workers 50 years ago.

I...

Re: Ignition recommendation for BSA A65

I've been running a Boyer MKII on my '66 BSA for 15 years.

Reliable but I have a consistent pinging problem when I really ring it out that I have had trouble solving with carburetion and timing...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Nothing smells quite like burnt assembly oil from first run on a rebuild!

Congrats.

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

I think you've confused INA for NFG ;-0

They are synonyms, I'll give you that.

I've seen it done with a dead blow hammer.

Your press will be fine ;-0

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Press tip: Use a short section of black pipe or PVC tube to support the gear on the press table when pressing the camshaft out.

Install tip: maybe unnecessary, but physics is on your side. Heat...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Sounds like you've got it.

joe49 cuts through the bullshit with the big tech tip! I agree.

As for JIMS tools . . . some are good, some are overkill unless you run a high-volume service shop.

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

The camshaft (not gear) has a machined reference for gear alignment. It corresponds to those two scribed lines.

When you press the gear off the '77-up cam, you'll see it.

Line this up with the...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Another vote for cam change.

Use a known quantity for a stock displacement, stock compression motor. H/J/1/A as were mentioned.

While the top's off, check your stroke and rod condition....

Re: External residual pressure valve for juice drum

Yes, the flat disk with rubber coating and the thimble-shaped aluminum cup are the pressure mechanism. The flat disk creates a sealing surface at the back of the master cylinder for the thimble to...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Couple shade tree ways to measure the pistons if you can't secure a 3'-4" mic.

1) Use a test indicator or dial indicator to measure front to back rocking of piston when the piston is at the...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

Have you set the valve lash recently (if solids)?

Can you pull the pushrods and test again?

Or . . . apply some air pressure to the cylinder (in TDC compression) with the timing plug out and...

Re: Shovel with EI not running...

I had a bunch of problems with Hi-4 and Spyke EI in the past.

Got tired of fucking around with it.

Will only use Dyna S now.

Re: Engine identification help - stroker??

Those don't appear to be big bore cylinders. Look at the base near the nuts. On a big-bore set the wall would be very close to the studs and you'd likely have twelve-point nuts (smaller diameter) and...

Re: External residual pressure valve for juice drum

Seems like 10psi is the number that comes up most when researching residual pressure in drum brake systems.

Valves with 1/8" NPT fittings cost around $20.

I'd say go for it. You'll know if...

Re: Timing plug - One of those days

If you're the worrying type (I generally am) you might also apply some compressed air (low-med pressure) to the crankcase while you're drilling so the chips will come out rather than fall in.

Am...

Re: Case stud question

Nice.

For next time . . . don't run a tap down a hole where the threads are good. It only removes material and makes for a looser fit.

Buy a thread-chaser tap instead. These are for...
