Re: Panhead VIN help...FLP???

Welcome to the forum. I agree the SN doesnít look consistent with factory stamping. Iíve heard stories before about some Panhead SNs having P to indicate police and my photo collection contains a few...

H-D blueprint for 1954 Panhead frame changes

Iím chasing a Harley blueprint regarding the three frames used for 1954 Panheads and apparently the blueprint indicates when the changes occurred: first wishbone to second wishbone and then straight...

Re: Engine Numbers

On CAI in 2015 I told Chris about six VAM case numbers in particular that may be non-factory but were not described as such. After reading my post he labelled two of them as Ďbogusí on VAM. The other...

Re: Engine Numbers

Please approach VAM case numbers with caution because some that are not consistent with factory stamping for the year and/or model concerned are not described as such. For example: 39EL1414 (page 2);...

Re: About the tool box bracket on Panhead frames

The new-for-52 toolbox bracket was recorded on at least one Harley drawing and the copy I have is dated 8-22-51. Hereís a close-up of the bracket from that drawing.

Re: 57 Pan Cases. Good Numbers?

Inside the left case should be casting number 24541 55 and a circled E. According to Palmerís 37Ė64 SE (2014) the hallmark represented Eck Industries. (Recently Palmer published a 36Ė65 edition but I...

Re: 57 Pan Cases. Good Numbers?

SNs for 57 Pans began at 1001 and probably finished somewhere between 6000 and 7000. Title says 57FL40 so there should only be two more sequence characters. Also please check that no letter was...

Re: 54 or 55 Panhead Identification

Thanks for the photo. I canít see anything wrong with the characters and they appear consistent with factory stamping for a 55 Pan. Notice the back of the 5 is vertical, as opposed to leaning to the...

Re: 54 or 55 Panhead Identification

I agree thatís the normal format for a 55FL serial number but what do the characters look like? Are they consistent with factory stamping for a 55 Pan? How high is the sequence portion? If youíre not...

Re: 54 or 55 Panhead Identification

The 54 models were announced in the Sept 53 issue of The Enthusiast. Notice it says the 50th anniversary medallion sets the 54 models apart from all others and identifies them as the culmination of...

Re: 41 el

That sounds better. And if itís 41-2469 then Iíd expect the characters to be the same types as in the two 41 examples I posted above.

Re your left case, I wonder if it too originally had...

Re: 41 el

Thanks Rhys. Which case has the BN? Left case or right case?

Very unusual to have any letters in a 1941 BN. I have no letters in photos of any authentic-looking BNs for 1941. Here are two 41...

Re: 41 el

Thanks Rhys. I donít know how many of the third type were produced for 41 but the few that Iíve seen have very high SNs suggesting intro late in the model year. As mentioned above, I have one...

Re: 41 el

Thanks John. Iím not sure about the quality of the blocks but Iíve heard a couple of stories regarding cracking of the Knuckle left case. Some say it was caused by omission of the baffle plates as of...

Re: 41 el

Rhys, Iím interested in your left case because I havenít seen many of that style for 41. Most 41 Knuckle left cases had short ribs and a number boss with two nubs above it as per the photos below.

Re: 53 Panhead Frame Neck Advice Requested

I agree Feb 53 and I have other examples of it. Itís possible there were some frame date codes for Jan 53 but I donít expect to find any earlier than that because of H-D drawing #47004-49A.

I...

Re: 53 Panhead Frame Neck Advice Requested

Dave, does that frame have a date code? Some 53 models had them but others didnít. A photo of the front engine mount may help with ID because it changed as of 53 models.

I agree a new steering...

Re: H-D additional original component identifying numbers

Thanks Mike. I too am not a restorer but I appreciate the time and effort people put in to collecting the right pieces. Way too costly for me though and Iím happy to remain just a researcher.
