Don't forget about the coil. Many times they will work fine when cold and crap out when they get a little warm.

Yup. 3 speed, 4 speed, or 5 speed doesn't matter. Final gear is still 1:1.

I was having the exact same problem with my pan. Turned out I had a cracked intake right at the weld into the head. It wasn't showing up until the engine was hot.

Mine was an 1988 and was chain drive from the factory, but even with the chain, it was a tight fit. Also, if you plan on putting the battery in front of the rear wheel, the offset belt still may not...

I ran around for a couple of weeks without one. I had just got the damn thing running and had to ride it. It was a 1200 Sporty and you couldn't keep your ass from sliding off the seat.
