What gauge wire - Batt to key

Doing a simplified re-wire on my 75 sporty.

I'm running a wire from my Bat+ ... though a 30amp fuse ... to the 'Bat' on the key switch. What gauge wire should I run?

Someone suggested crimping + heat shrink over soldering/heathshrink because the solder is too brittle and could break on a jittery old bike. Any thoughts?
