Lucas magnetos work differently to the Fairbanks Morse type Magnetos,... same basic physics but obtained by a completely different route, . not a lot of American ideas are universally used,...

the bodies are the same it is all down to internals, yes you need a new cam in it and then find out which way it spins as there are obviously two directions it could run with the points in different...

you time a magneto on the front cylinder compression stroke with the long cam lobe just about to open the points,... NOT the rear as you seem to say,... sounds like you have timed it on the wrong...

so why go for an S&S pump at silly money ?...why not go for a standard one complete from one of the dealers here in England,... would be cheaper, no shipping or import tax and probably quicker if you...

just going by the staining of the valve, grinding marks on the guide & scar marks on the valve, it doesn't look like whoever rebuilt the top end did a great job, is what 'Panhead Bobber' Means I...

no reason you couldn't fit the magneto other than the cylinder head bolts....
check first that you will be able to get to them all with the magneto in place
