Sportster 18 inch rear wheel swap *help*

I'm looking to swap out my stock 16" rear wheel for a new 18" rear rim for my sportster. HD owners, what is the largest rim diameter that will fit without having to mod anything? I'm looking to go for something between a 3.50-4.25" wide rear rim.

In Diameter the 18" is really the same Rollout, as most 16's
3.50-4.25 width is a different thing...I guess while you have the rear wheel out you could just measure the width at the farthest forward area in the swingarm..

And It is good Manners to do an Intro..Normally I don't respond to a question as a first post...But I must be feelin philanthropic...Or sumpin like that

I hope you mean 3.50 to 4.25 WIDE. A 3 to 4 inch diameter rim would look sorta funny :D

The answer to your question depends, in part, on what year your Sportster is. On the early Sportster, which came from the factory with an 18" rear wheel, the fender was just barely wide enough to get a 5.00x16 tire on a 16 x 3 rim up under the fender. (and if the bike had ever been down, and the fender struts bumped to one side or the other, that tire would rub.)

The late rigid mount Evo Sportsters, through 2003, had enough room for a 150 (mm) tire on a 16 x 3 rim. Your 2005 rubber mount Sportster, should have at least that much. The limit will probably be tire to drive belt clearance before anything else.

If it's any help, I have a 150/70-18 Brigestone Battlax mounted on a 3.5 x 18 rim that measures 5 3/4" total width. Be aware that not all tires of the same nominal size measure out the same in width or diameter.

Rim width, by the way, is measured on the inside at the bead seat.
