Here's an article I read today about Hot-Rod and Chopper artist Dave Bell...
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...=694686&page=2 Seems he suffered a heart attack, and now they've discovered brain cancer on the man. What a sad thing. He's been a huge influence on my work. GodSpeed Dave.

Apparently, there was a previous thread about his work from a few years ago already on the board here...

sad to hear...he did lots of work for Street Chopper /AEE when I was there. One day Rose McMullen walks up to Lenny the parts manager and says "here", hands him a package and she walks away. He opens it and inside its an original Dave Bell drawing of Lenny on his chopper! He did it unsolicited for Lenny. Great guy.

My buddy Tom Rad wrote on FACEBOOK:
"He has been taken into hospice care for inoperable brain cancer... To all the Dave Bell fans around the world that had the pleasure of knowing him and working with his "Art" please keep him in your prayers! He is a "Great" artist and a wonderfull person to know !" I met him in 2008. It was a pleasure to talk with him about the old times... He liked that I still remember Jock E. Shift after all the years... My prayers for him! |

I asked Dave if he would design me a business card....took him about two minutes, so I asked him how much do I owe him....he wouldn't accept a penny. Praying for him and his family.

Thats very sad news indeed. In my book, Dave Bell is an art god! Dave and Hal Robinson made a BIG impression on me in my youth.

Dave came to our house back in the late 60s and lettered my Dad's race car.
I had no idea who he was. Sorry to hear he's sick.

Was it George Washington who said "I'm a soldier so my son can be an engineer, so that his son can be an artist" something like that. The highest ideal of civilized man is ART. We are all diminished when a true artist dies.

Very sad to hear when a one-of-a-kind like him hits a wall like this. Go with God Mr. Bell.

Nobody could match how much feeling Dave could put into a line. Dave's style was simple and super clean, but if you have ever tried to do anything like his work, you know results like Dave's were unobtainable.
I always went to the last page of Street Rodder first to check out Dave's Henry Hi-Rise. I've scanned in tons of Jock E. Shift toons. Dave's use of color in his striping was spectacular. There was no mistaking this man's work for anyone elses. He will be truly missed. Condolences and prayers for Dave's family and friends. Godspeed Mr. Bell and thank you for all you have given us in the bike and car world!

My Minnesota chopper brother Tom Rad informed me today:
Just got the word second hand that a fantastic artist and story teller Dave Bell passed away over the weekend. A huge loss to the Custom car/motorcycle world has happened here... Dave Bell, 1939-2012 RIP - Just imagine... Ed Roths and Dave Bells drawing tables side by side... Now they are both drawing for the "Big Man" Rest in Peace, Dave! Save the Choppers |
