Default Online tube notching calculator

I'm sure some of you guys know about this, but I just found it so I thought I'd share.

I'm putting a new set of pipes on the shovel - the plan is to run 2 into 1, so I needed to figure out how to cope the rear pipe into the front pipe.

I started by clamping the rear pipe at the angle on my drill press and running a holesaw into it. Too much, chatter and deflection...I'm not about to screw up my drillpress for this.

Then I tried coping by hand - that was a waste of an hour and came out terrible.

I resigned myself to doing a quick google search to see how people were doing this and came across this cool little tool: http://metalgeek.com/static/cope.pcgi

Here's my process:

1) Do some calculations and plug the numbers into the website. The tool spits out the curve of the cope. (I printed a few just in case I screwed up a few)

2) After cutting out the curve out, I wrapped it around the pipe. The pipe has been marked with Dykem so the scribed line shows more easily. If you haven't heard of Dykem or aren't using it - do yourself a favor and go get some.

Then I hogged out the majority of the cut with a grinder and smoothed up to the scribe lines with a rough cut bastard file. If you don't have files...go get some.

Here's a test fit pic of my cut on a pipe. Fits like a glove, no gaps, will weld up beautifully and matches the angle of the front pipe perfectly.

That's it - about 20 minutes, minus the measurement part of the process.

If you guys need to notch pipe and don't have the money or quantity of work to justify investing in a machine, I highly recommend the website. As you can see it works well, is free and simple.

Thanks.

A friend of mine does this on his expensive solid works program. He had to put a lot of time into figuring out how to get these pint outs. Wait til I show him this!(he he!)

Cool site. I'm a (was) body designer, a couple of views and and some projections is all it takes. But the way you did it is even faster.

Thanks for posting that Pete. Very slick. That calculator gives the same results as using the old pipefitting technique for making coping templates. It eliminates all the calculating and graphing you had to do back in "the old days". Nice looking job on your cope too. By the way, if you don't have any Dykem at hand, a blue, red, or black magic marker works pretty well. The contrast with your scribed line will not be quite as distinct as with Dykem, but perfectly servicable. Magic marker drys faster and isn't as messy.

Regards,
Geo.

That's cool - I'd never considered marker or paint, but it's a great idea. My dad's a mechanical engineer and spent a lot of time in tool rooms, so he picked up a lot of tricks and practical how-to's.

We were standing in a tooling supply store and he handed my a bottle of Dykem. I got the bottle and brush setup so it takes a min to dry and I have lots of tiny blue dot spray on every work surface in my garage

Usually I'm putting the fluid on some steel I just got done wirebrushing, so the heat in the metal makes it dry right away.

Years ago I used this shareware program to calculate & lay out conical shapes to transfer onto sheet metal...I don't have a PC so I can't check out what it's like now, but it may still be of use. 21 day trial-
