Default Winged Wheel imagery

So, this is motorcycle related and I do know the rules.. so I hope this falls within the limits. I have seen the 'winged wheel' imagery pop up a lot lately whether it be lowbrows tshirt logo or on several guys blogs's I have seen.

My understanding is that it is from two sources. The Detroit redwings and motorcycle police... is there anyone who can give me more history on the origin, current meaning, past meaning of this imagery?

Here is an example.

And so much useful information there...

I was looking for more 'bike culture' knowledge on the subject.

The winged wheel image goes back way before motorcycles even existed. The "League of American Wheelmen" started in 1880 to support the rights of bicyclists. Their logo has a winged wheel incorporated into it. Various American motorcycle makers used variations of the design in logos in the early part of the 20th century. The FAM (federation of American motorcyclists) which began in 1903 used a variation of a winged wheel with an engine overlaid on it as their logo. It went on to represent motorcycles in general so many PDs use it to designate their motorcycle divisions. ( Detroit started using motorcycles in '08, recognized as the official entry of bikes into law enforcement in the USA) Lots of clubs incorporated a version of it into their logos from the teens on.

cool history..in fact The L.A.W. was responsible for the paving of the first roads.

I actually have a couple of there leaflets from the teens and twenties...cool reading, with a little insight to what was going through the minds of the adrenaline driven men of that day.

Also, there is a passage in Ezekiel that says something about flying wheels or winged wheels that I thought would make a killer tattoo...

Cheers

The winged wheel has been part of the IMS logo forever.

The Nazi Party ruined a lot of cool symbols. Guess we can add this to the list.

IIRC, they stole the image from the German Autobahn.
