Go to scta-bni.org and you will find the records for Bonneville and El Mirage. These are SCTA records (the only ones that really count). USFRA (Utah Salt Flat Racers Assoc.) also run to SCTA rules and records set at their meet count. BUB runs to their own rules and AMA. I think you might find their records on their site. I never have been able to find AMA records.

Dean Lowe is one of the cool guys. But he's right about going to Bonneville. Its one of those magic places that should be visited (and raced) in your life. Leaving Bonneville with a record cert in your pocket is a feeling that cannot be beat.

Hoofhearted- thanks for the info. I kept finding different sites with different records, I didn't know there were several different organizations. I would love to do this sometime in my life. Don't really have the skills but that article got me thinking and inspired.

What do you think are the best bikes to start with in the 100cc or 125cc
class? Looks like they are dominated by Honda. Any other options? hell even 50cc class I think would be fun. I mean screw the records it would be totally worth it just to make some passes.

Maybe you could make some more exceptions to the No-japanese rule as long as it's
about something that's really,really cool. Like this or "Denver's"

There are a lot of options. The SCTA has a class for just about anything you want to build. 100 cc is a good starting point. cheap and easy. You don't have to build a AA/BFR that will so 300 just to go to the salt. As I've said before I'm as dumb as dirt and as poor as a churchmouse. Not quite as old as Burt Munro. I took a 47 year old Norton/Weslake 500 to Bonneville in 2007. It was towed there by a 30 year old RV that I bought about a week before we set off. Camped at the bend in the road (great place, free, great people). Made some passes and was able to put two of them together to get a record. Broke a bunch of bits on the return run but that didn't matter. I left impound with a record cert. in my back pocket. And that makes up for everything!! Plus we had more fun than can be imagined!

USFRA run to SCTA rules. They also have a 130mph and 150mph class plus others. Google USFRA and all will be revealed. I don't know BUB rules or records and as the SCTA records carry more weight I've never really searched that hard. Bonneville is a place you should visit before you die. I'm heading for the USFRA meet in Sept. My record is soft and I want to put it up where it belongs. I got laid off last year and just couldn't afford to go. But if you do go watch out for the salt bugs. Once they bite you you will have to go back and back and back! Thankfully there is no cure.

Nice pic hoofhearted! I think I just read everything on the USFRA site as well as the SCTA site ordered a rule book too. You never know a 100cc sure looks like a sh&t load of fun. I'm definitely going out this year as a spectator. Funny how I read that post by Ryan this afternoon and then managed to get nothing else done the rest of the day.

Great story....No big dollars, no energy drink, no big displacement. Really it sounds like they really didnt even care what they did or how they ranked...they just wanted to do it.

When you get to Bonneville this year look closely how everything works. If someone needs a hand don't be afraid to volunteer. Learn as much as you can. It will stand you in good stead when you present your machine at tech in 2010. The neat thing is not everyone is there to break the absolute record be it bike or car. Some are there for the hell of it. To make a some passes, drink some beer, make new friends, meet old ones. Its one of those magic places that draws you back. I'm planning on the USFRA meet in Sept. as work is keeping me from SpeedWeek in August.

But for now I'm loaded for El Mirage this weekend. First time out for the sidecar and it'll either go fast or I'll make a total dick of myself. It will be interesting to see what happens.
