Default May 29-30 & June 12-13, 2009: Biltwell Sub-24-hour Camp/Ride

THE DATE AT THE TOP OF THIS THREAD IS WRONG:

THE NEW DATE FOR OUR NEXT 24-HOUR OVERNIGHTER TO SALTON SEA FROM BILTWELL HQ IS JUNE 12-13, 2009.

PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF IT.

THANKS!

McGoo

Photobucket

I'm going on a motorcycle ride the SECOND WEEKEND OF JUNE with some light camping thrown in for good measure. Everyone's invited. Here's my plan:

Dates: Friday, June 12 & Saturday, June 13, 2009
Jump-off point: Biltwell HQ, Temecula, CA
Destination: Salton Sea Recreation Area
Itinerary:
Friday:
12:00 noon—lunch at Hard Hats in Temecula (next door to Biltwell HQ)
1:00 pm to 5:00 pm—ride to Indio; meet Riverside and LA county posse at corner of 46th and Indio Blvd.
5:30 to 6:00—ride to campground; pitch a tent
7 'till whenever—drunken dumbness

Saturday:
Morning—wake up, check out, ride home

Everyone who wishes to come on this ride must make his own arrangements for camping. Click here for info and online reservations. There's a two-vehicle max limit per camp space, so if there are five riders in your posse, you'll need three spaces (2, 2, and 1—easy.)

Here's the route we're taking out of Temecula after lunch on Friday.

How we come home is anyone's guess. The Google map link above will give you some good ideas for a return route.

S24ON#2 update:

Not sure where Salton Sea is, or what it looks like? Check out this photo montage and story from the pages of Ride BMX, the world's leading bike rag. Keith Mulligan is the mag's editor and a SoCal chopper fan himself. Awesome images.

If there's a motorcycle magazine editor in SoCal with a nut in his sack, he'll drag some camera gear and a bike to this location and shoot some damn motorcycle photos… are you reading this, Jeff Holt?

See you May 29…

I've only checked out the Salton Sea once & it sucked. Billions of dead fish
washed along the beaches & the worst smell imaginable. It was so nasty
We didn't stick around long as We could see the fish everywhere, It wasn't
just one stretch of beach. I think the ph level or salinity of the water got
out of wack & the fish couldn't hang.

I was there in '92, and it was good then, heard the stories, read the paper about it now. Yep, the ride is what it's all about...

I used to camp at Salton Sea in the early 80's with my parents . It was still pretty clean back then . We stayed at an RV park on the west side , about a 1/3 of the way up .

That place has been gone for a few decades now , but I have good memories of that place . I've never been on the east side of the sea , but there's a lot of trippy shit over there . Check out Bombay Beach . There's a whole huge community of crazy trailer people all living out there . . . it's like mad max kind of .

Let me see,,,, The site of the largest man-made ecological disaster in history that includes at no additional cost, entire housing developments - streets with curbing & signs, fire hydrants and driveway cuts but no houses ever built, a 9 hole golf course laid out in the dirt, scores of dead fish floating near the shore, abandoned casinos & hotels, tweekers, the most bizarre bar I've had occasion to frequent (below sea level in Bombay Beach), a religious shrine created by a guy who got there by way of a hot air balloon like 25 years ago, an abandoned Marine base... Try and tell me there isn't ample opportunity for a good time.

Can't wait.

I think Bombay Beach might the front door of The Twilight Zone's private meth lab. I dig the post-apocalyptic nature of it and look forward to exploring around there some more. Bring some paint.

Once you have been there you will never forget it.... Bombay Beach is the strangest place I have ever been... Ever. A must see.
