Yeah. It was cold like last year. Yeah, there's some jap-influ-from-US-influ but it's all good. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it this year. This is my favorite show hands down.
I posted this on the org chop thread, but for those of you drawn to pics, I took 100.

What was supposed to be rain turned into a sweet crisp December day. here's a few more snaps. The picture of that trike, they kept firing that thing up during the show. It sounded like a hopped up leaf blower. The one below had a Alfa Romeo engine in it.

Thanks to all who braved the cold and the threats of rain to show up. It was 37 degrees out when I got there to work the vendor gate. Glad to see the riders that braved the cold.
And, as one of the gay judges...try it yourself sometime and see if everybody is happy with your results. Too many nice bikes, somebody has to lose! Many of the judges are from Paisano Publications, and worked with Dave Mann for many years. The rest of us just partied with him...so who are we to judge? Just a bunch of gay old judgmental farts...heavy on the mental!
Thanks again to everybody who showed! (PS..Dave Mann show is moving to August).

I rode my Triumph down with Paul on his green flamed pan and Danny on his black and red knuckle... what fun! It was the first time I got it out on the freeway since getting it running... friggin' 65mph felt like 165! We froze our NUTS off... actually, my nuts were still there, it's just that my sack felt like a walnut shell.

Sam

Thanks for the nice pic of my bike man! You can see Paul's pan next to it and Danny's knuckle besides that... those guys are uber-cool.

Not too many Triumphs there though...

Awards only mean something to me when it's from someone I respect.

Don't get all wrapped up in trophys, or you will always be disappointed. If the show has teenage girls, or the local mayor picking the winners, I go to the show, but dont put the tag on my bike or hotrod....which really confuses the judges...makes the show more fun

I can see why They would want to move the Choperfest to a month that
is less likely to have rain, But August? there's all ready a ton of stuff going in august, I kind of like it in December, Gives ya somethin to look forward to during the off season.

I seen some of them baggers in the show & was shocked that they were even
allowed. after all it is a "Chopper"fest not a bagger banquet.
lame. The real bikers know who really won the contest, For Me it was the orange & Black Knuckle. & the Baby Blue Pan runner up.

maybe we should have a vote here & JJ'ers will determine the winners instead of the out of touch geezers.

Man, That Black and Orange Knuck with the Rabbit Ears really turned out schmick. Amazing Bike. Chorro has done an amazing job on that.

Also cool to see Brian on his Beeser. That's still my favourite bike getting around. That low-shot from the cycle zombies meet has been my desktop for about 3 months now.

Cool pics Matt! good time for sure. To spite the chilly ride it was a perfect day, up and back. A killer weekend for sure!! Always good to see familiar faces and shoot the shit about old scoots. I agree about change of dates, I think it's a bad move.

I love it!!! Drop the old sarcastic remark and walk away. Worked just right according to plan. Got you guys all worked up over nothing. Justed checked back on the thread and saw that you guys were getting all worked up so I figured I better step in and point the sarcasm out to calm things. Mostly domestic Cali style at its finest!

Too late, they're already past all that.

Now it's all about 'hating on' the old guys......

Shit I would have never believed I'd see the phrase "generation gap" in 2 posts in a thread on here.

Who was the guy in the VW Rabbit convertable following the "Hide Yer Daughters" gang around with the video camera as they left?
That was funny... shit, Elvis Presley didn't even have a guy following him around with a camera as he rode around. Hahahahaha!!

ha ha only joking, as I say all the bikes look the same but all I'm trying to say is why judge the bikes when they all are good? theres no piont.
so many harleys an shit all done up to the 9's. which one is best?
who gives a fuck.
there all as good as each other. it's bollox judjing competitions that are based on taste, like the art scene here in england. theres thousands of artists that are great but only one shit one wins the turner prize.

You know I didn't give a rats ass about the contest. All I knew is it was the middle of December and the sun was shining I was right on the ocean and all I had to do was look at a bunch of sweet bikes. I was there early so it was nice to check out all the bikes with hardly anyone standing around them. This Knuckle for me was the best bike I saw there. I thought the Chromed Triumph was nice and the Triumph with the Sporty tank was pretty cool as well.

The Mann show, as far as traditional old style bikes go, turns out to be the best show all year in large part due to the bikes and the people who ride and build them. Yesterday, 90% of the coolest bikes that were in the spirit of what Dave Mann was all about, were built and ridden by cats in the 20-40 year old range. Most of the bikes that won first place trophies were built by dudes that don't even ride them, not to mention only 2 or 3 of the bikes were even remotly close to "The Dave Mann" spirit.
For god sake my good friend JD put his insane hand built sporty in the show, it won second for RAT BIKE??!?! Hello, it's not a fucking rat bike.

Basically, the judging of the show showed a clear generational gap and an entire culture that is totally out of touch with their own history. It's the young cats that are keeping it going, HONOR them, not your fucking buddy from the local HOG chapter. Fuck Passiono, PissonO or whatever publication, get the builders to judge the show.. do something different.
Dave Mann was a huge reason I got in to bikes and art, all though I did not know him, I am pretty sure that he may not feel to good about having a Twinkie Bagger take a first place ribbon in a show that promotes itself as an old school chopper show while 2 killer knuck choppers, a killer stretch pan that could have crawlled right out of one of his paintings, didn't even place...

For me, lose the judge contest all together, make it ride in only, get back to your roots old dudes.. god damn!

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
Geez! I was just thanking ya'll for showing. Without a new generation doing this, that show would be just a bunch of old farts starin' at each other till we die off and hope somebody gets some use from our old piles. I think the new blood makes these shows. But Dave Mann even understood the difference between a rider and a show bike. So sometimes ya piss folks off, hell we're used to that, we were doing this before it got mainstream.
And, where did you see Dave Mann's work anyway? Without that job he had with Paisano, you may have never heard of him. His co-workers were to a great extent, his extended family. I like their input on what Dave would have liked.
We have no idea of the age of the owner of the bike is when we look at it.
So, we should HONOR you? Maybe a class for 20 to 40 year-olds?
Quit yellin' at yer elders, take a long look at some of the bikes built by them and learn. I know we're irritating in our old age, but there must be some reason you're trying to do what we've been doing since you were less than a stain.

matt - i wasnt keeping my hand warm, i was actually keeping my balls warm so they wouldnt fall off!!! swear to god!! fuck it was cold!!! i had long underwear, two shirts, a wool pendelton, and a jacket on and i still felt like i was going into hypothermia.

me and the turkey had a burnout contest all day long that started at 6am. turkey won by layin a 10ft rubber trail on a sidewalk off the johnson 101 exit. it was radical! in fact, the whole experience was rad. had a great time.

"all those bikes start to look the same...amazing but none the less...alike..."

As opposed to flat black and pipe wrap??

This thread did bring a smile to my face. These are the scooters that we were trying to build in the 70's, glad to see them coming back to the front!

And not all old guys are HOG chapter members. In fact I think most of the HOG members weren't really riding in the "good ol days". There are still a lot of old riders around. They just kinda blend into the background. 'Specially when you lump all old guys into the "HOG thang". LOL You might have more in common with them than you think.

I see my point was lost in the loudness of it. I was being sarcastic about the judging of the show, NOT the event, the ride and the people. Show all the bikes that won 1st place trophies compared to all the bikes in the show and let the people comment.

I have great admiration for the old timers, while I am not an old timer I am not young either. The old timers I know, and the ones I learned from would have the same opinion I have about the judging of the show. I was making a broader point, in the context of this particular show. If it was the Venture Chopper show I would have never had a thought, but it was the Dave Mann Old School chopper show.
The event was great, aside from the judging of the show. This is why I said, lose the judged show.

No harm no foul, I had a momentary lapse of reason by even posting on this board.

The pics Matt D posted are what it is all about! The shows have never been the reason I build scoots, its Matt's pics of why I do it.

Saw some pics of the winners and just have to completely agree with Caleb here. If I were to ever have a prestigious chopper show named after me, I would hope they would honor stuff that didnt make me sick.

California rules. If Sunday was cold then I'm never leaving. The town I left in NH is frozen solid and without electricity for the next two weeks. I had a great time at the show. I placed second in metric with a bike that was ridden to the show. The bike that took first in that class I did all the leatherwork on. It is a show only bike but the owner is a nice guy. I have no clue who won overall. I didn't even know I had placed until I went to get my bike. I was able to ride my buddy Bob's jet bike around the parking lot until security shut that down. All in all a fun day. - Duane

Maybe in 20 years you can jump on Matt D for being out of touch. Matt is doing exactly what Lou Kimsey did many years ago when he started Easyriders.
Meanwhile, maybe we go all PC and give everybody trophys so there are no losers and hurt feelings. Just like a PC kindergarten class. Sorry, in life and in bike shows and races, not everybody is a winner. I loved seeing all the Dice crew come riding in. That IS what it is all about, but there are other things too.
I patiently listened while judging to a detailed description of a strutless fender mount that holds the whole piece together with one bolt. A gorgeous piece of work going probably un-noticed on a beautiful black knuckle. I'm 55...the guy with all the enthusiasm and talent showing me all this?...Jimmy Shane, 72 years young, former guitar player with Canned Heat, and talented machinist and incredibly energetic. I learned...I listened...I didn't shoot my mouth off...

I cant believe all the whining, it was a bike show in december with some nice tin to look at and no rain. Judging at all shows, car shows, bike shows, donkey shows, is always gonna leave someone scratching their head in confusion. Too much is put on that bullshit, and in my opinion if your going to a show to go home with a trophy your in it for the wrong reasons. Also, just to play devils advocate, most of the cool kids didn't even have show registration cards under their wheels, which excludes them from being judged and also means that they got to enjoy the event for free.....which I thought was pretty cool of the organizers.....I think the "generation gap" thing is a result of some of the older guys still having an attitude about certain bikes (sportsters, triumphs, jap bikes) and not sharing the knowledge easily with the younger guys who want to learn. But alot of those old dudes are willing to share what they know and we need to remember that none of us would be into this shit if it wasn't for previous generations. I got nothing good to say about Paisano publications though, I worked at Easyriders in the early 90's and the company was out of touch back then and even more so now....It's all about baggers and advertising money(don't get me started on their attempt at a hotrod magazine). Ok, sorry for the rant, back to turning wrenches.....

Duane, I saw you after you got your ribbon, I wish I would have known you are on the JJ, I would have liked to have met you!

And I think the guy who won the Metric bike class was parked right next to me... was it a white chopper with a diamond tank? That bike was bad ass!

It's kinda sad that just because one guy voices his opinion, right or wrong, that this thread then needs to turn into a debate about awards, people, bikes etc.

I'm not ignorant about this stuff... but it's almost better to act ignorant to it all, and look at the glass as being half full.

The show was BAD ASS... there were BAD ASS bikes there... the ride down was cold but inspirational (inspiring me to want a faster bike)... I didn't meet a single person who was an ass hole... good times... old friends, new friends... and inspiration to build something else!

The Dave Mann Show is always a great show 'cause of the location, time of year (Day after Mooneyes Gig), the good Cali weather (for winter anyway) and of course all the great people and bikes. There was a HUGE turnout of Knuckles, the most I have ever seen at a show at one time, that alone made it a great show. If you get all worked up about winning, judging and classification you're just aren't gonna have a good time period and shouldn't come! I was sick as a dog that day, didn't even set up our booth, thought I was gonna die coughing when I was kick starting my bike, but I still had a great time! It's always good to see everyone, and what your doing to your bikes, always!

Dan, well said. You hit it on the spot. Shows are for those to show what they have done, see others bikes, cars, trucks and get ideas and the bottom line is just to enjoy the event with good friends and meet new people too!!

I got what Caleb was saying even though most seem to have misunderstood since it's hard to hear/see someone's expresions/inflections/tone of voice via a message board(might as well be written on a bathroom wall).
It just seems a little wrong that at a supposed "proper chopper show" (which there aren't many) they would award stuff to baggers, etc at an event with so much history.
I don't think Caleb was there for the trophies. And I don't think the "old guys" would be able to do this kinda stuff in years to come without the "youngins".

What would the show been like without ANY of the younger generation's bikes?

I think the older generation should be proud as hell that they have such good torch bearers bringing up the rear with the insane amounts of appretiation for the history of where their bikes are coming from and the (old) guys that started it.

Hope this means something to someone, but I'm sure you'll let me know if it doesn't. what if Dean and Matt started giving out trophies to baggers at Dice shows...it's the principal.

If I can see just ONE thing at a show that gets me cranked up about haulin ass home, and thrashing in the shop, then the show is a success. That show would've kept me going for a month....

i get where your coming from caleb... i thought it was a great show and was impressed with the turn out. i used the chopperfest as my deadline to get my bike done. i was so proud of my new paint job on my regular ol' knuck (that i rode to the show). but then after i saw all the clean trailered bikes i knew what the show results would be. i didn't really care about winning anything either, it was a great december day to ride and check out other bikes. maybe they should move it to the same day as the love ride and that way we can enjoy chopperfest for what it really is...

pssst, hey, the badass black and gold knuckle pictured right above, was built by Danny, Phil, and Jimmy Shane. It's perfection is matched only by the pedegree of its builders.

I thought the show was fun. A neat place to hang out between rides. The cost of gas is low, the sun was out.....What else could you ask for?

You mods should give Duane the go ahead on a thread for his bike, I believe it's a japper of the quality to be compared to Denver's and other quality cb's of the 70's. I hope this doesn't start a shitstorm but this is a top notch bike.

Here's another angle of that bitchen aquamarine Pan
notice the ladies in the background drooling over it.
There were a number of the old Pan bobbers & I would not enjoy being the Guy that had to judge them. They were all Class.

As a group you are whining about the judges. Don't lie, you're a stylin bro and you spent a day looking for you forrest gump shoes.

I know all about judging and awards. I work in the classic auto print media industry and have to pick "Top 5" awards at shows across the country with thousands of entrants. I piss people off all the time...but I do pick vehicles befitting mine and our reader's tastes through out the spectrum. Sometimes I have a hard time finding 5 that I like at a show with over 5000 entries...

And yes, it is hard to find the classic New Balance 574 shoes.

So are there any pics of the winners at this years David Mann show?

Nice bikes, but at a chopperfest, shouldn't it be bikes that have actually been CHOPPED?????
