Default Triumph 650 top speed?

I have a '66 triumph with a 72 motor. Single Amal carb. How fast should this thing be able to go? I had it on a main 4 lane road and it seemed about topped out keeping up with traffic prolly 60-65 mph. It was only turning 4 or 5k rpm but the throttle was pegged.

A lot depends on your gearing but that sounds awfully slow.
What front/rear sprockets are you running?
Fresh tuneup? Good compression? Jetting correct?
And, 4 or 5K rpm, by ear, or with a tach? Lots of people under-rev them, thinking they're topped out. They actually start to come alive at about 4k rpm, in my experience. All the fun is from 4000-6000.

i have a late 60s 650 with mild cams & .030 over. single amal 930 carb. my bike likes to cruise on the highway around 60-65 mph. its got plenty more revs to go above that. at 60mph my throttle is only about 1/4 open. im running a 20T front sprocket. by the way it feels & has felt when i layed into it for a while - i dont see any problem with topping the 100mph mark. like chuck said - they really like to rev & they do not like chugging around at 'big twin' revs.

just a quick google search reveals that a stock 1970 650 Trophy (single carb) pulls 105.6mph. now factoring in that my bike is over 100lbs lighter than stock and has one more tooth up front and some mild motor mods - it should top that pretty easily.

I have gone well over 90 mph on the FL turnpike and it still had a bit more throttle to go. I have a 750 big bore, single carb, 21 tooth front, 43 tooth rear, and a five speed transmission.

that's what I figured guys. Now what should I be looking at? It has a k&n type filter inside the stock housing. How about the needle jet? I think it's set on the top slot should I move it to the center?

yep, the middle slot is a stock setting. if the clip is in the top slot, that leans it out - combine that with a free flowing K & N like you have - you have a lean running bike. does it run really hot?

i would get the carb back to its original settings mentioned in the repair manual & go from there. just make sure you only do one thing at a time so you know what the problem is/was.

That's what I thought but the only odd thing is that it also gets shitty mileage...

Do you have the propper length throttle cable, in other words is the carb slide all the way up @ w.o.t?

That sounds like a good thing to check! I adjusted the needle valve clip down to the middle groove from the top, it added a lot of speed but then it wouldn't idle worth a shit and it's hard to start.

i had mine on a chassis dyno 2 weeks ago 3rd gear w.o.t @7500 with 3.00x21 tire and 20x47 gear was 100 mph tire speed in 3rd gear- 4th would prob bring it to around 120 im guessing

ive had my t100r steady at 80mph , (65- 70 is all day) and it felt like it had more. it loves the hi rpm's i forget what the wheel sproket is, smallest that will fit, the front is a 19.

Is your clutch slipping at all? 5000rpm's sounds high that speed.

ive had my 64 up around 80 and it had way more to go but with the hardtail and the horrible denver roads i dont dare take it any faster then that! ive been nearly launched off the damn thing after hitting the massive sink holes that occur on the roads around here!

I have a '55 T110, single carb, stock and will do 85 with no problem and throttle left over. Sounds like its lean, mine supposedly would do 110 when new.

throttle is opening all the way, seems better now with some more carb adjustments. I think it will probably go about 70 now. Is 5k high for that speed? seems like 4K is about 50-55. The clutch doesn't seem to be slipping that I can tell...
