Default ? about oxy/acetylene bottle sizes

been wanting an o/a rig for a long time, and now i have the shop space! i've only ever used really big tanks and the silly mini-tank things you can get at sears. what size tanks do you guys recommend for someone like me, who's only going to use them occasionally? obviously bigger tanks means less trips to the welding shop, but will say 20cf oxy/10cf ac combo last me a reasonable amount of time?

i have no objections to larger tanks mind you beyond the initial investment.

I am pricing out tanks for my new shop as we speak. The largest size was the biggest investment but when you run the numbers it is better in the long run. That and I dont want to run out on Saturday night while running a rosebud since I live 25 miles from the closest supplier. This is at least true in my area.

I have a set of both and allways use the mini tanks. I have the on a dolly so I can wheel it around wherever I need. I haven't filled them up in the last year and I'd say I use it pretty regularly.

80 CF will do you fine...a lot of places want an account for the big bottles.

You'll also want a larger oxy bottle than acetylene if you'll be doing a lot of cutting.

Never heard of an “A tank” for acetylene but the B, you will blow thru with any sizeable rosebud or cutting head. I use “T” & “WS” because they were x-tras at my brother's shop. They seem to last forever.

I had an old timer tell me long ago that “B” stands for bus and “MC”stands for motorcycle for back in the day when they used gas to run headlights.

Standard oxygen cylinder sizes:
T - 330 FT3 - 9.25" O.D. - 60" tall
K or KL - 244
FT3 - 9.00" O.D. - 56" tall
LK - 244 FT3– 8.9375" O.D. - 56" tall
D - 122 FT3 - 7.5" O.D. - 48" tall
E or Y - 122 FT3 - 7.0" O.D. - 48" tall
Q - 80 FT3- 7.125" O.D. - 35" tall
XL - 70 FT3 - 6" O.D. - 41" tall
S - 150 FT3 – 7.375" O.D.- 51" tall
R - 20 FT3 – 5.3125" O.D. - 19" tall

Standard acetylene cylinder sizes:

T & WS here as well, but we just pay for the gas and the welding supply takes them back and refills them.

Maybe they meant 'R' tank instead of 'A' tank?

Good luck.

One more thing to consider, in our area the larger tanks must either be bought or rented. With these sometime you must take care of having the tanks inspected every couple of years. They also have what they call cash and carry tanks which are the smaller ones which you just walk in an exchange without any hassle. I find these alot better and if you need you could always have spare on hand.

I bought my tanks a bunch of years back - they're about 3 - 4 feet tall (O taller than A for cutting). I've had each refilled once and need them both refilled now - more than worth the investment. I just take them to the shop and they swap 'em out with full ones.

"A" tank is smaller than a car size fire extinguisher.

My Acetylene tank is just under 3' tall, the Oxy, just over 4.

Bought a Victor set off a welder on disability 10 yrs ago, had the guages and controls rebuilt cost under 400 to get up & running. When I needed the larger tanks the local shop credited me for the ones they took from me so...keep checking Craigslist for a complete set unless you neeeed to have it new.Use it up and then decide what you need for tanks, torches etc.

There're a lot of cool torches, different feels, balance etc

THANKS a lot guys, i really appreciate the insight. i did some calling around and decided i could get more bang for my buck if i bought a decent torch outfit new, and scored some bottles on the cheap.

i'm going to pick up one of these kits http://store.cyberweld.com/visuraiiwecu.html new, from the ebay seller i bought my MIG from (weldingsuppliesatioc, can't recommend them enough), and score some bottles off craigslist. they seem to show up regularly enough and what i learned when i bought my MIG is that new bottles are a waste of money. they just swap you for a full used one at the shop.

to avoid additional expense you can convert your torch to run on propane, its a simple conversion and you can get propane bottles at walmart, even on a sunday ,,plus NO BOTTLE LEASE on propane,I have oxy ace at my in town shop only because I got a giant ass cylinder of it full for clearing out and old timers shop/garage/gas station/carwash,when its gone,Im back to propane,at my house garage I have a oxy/propane set up also.It works almost as hot as ace/oxy,you can cut, weld.silver solder, braze ect with it easily.
