Bobbers, bobbers, bobbers- choppers, choppers, choppers! Don't get me wrong; I run a bobber myself but there is a world of other bikes out there that are the coolest fuckin things in the world.
Like for instance the trackmaster in this months Dice- I defy anyone to tell me that isnt the coolest bike. I only bought my Triumph cos I saw one that was trying to be a trackmaster and then the guy who owned that bike went and bought himself a real trackmaster- what a beast. So show me your flat trackers and desert racers. |

My Modern ride that I sold last year:
![]() A vintage Champion "in the nude": (for sale) ![]() A bultaco I used to have: ![]() I'll see if I can take some pic's of some others I have hanging around here. I got a few, including a HD MX250-based bike that belonged to an Ex-GNC #1 plate rider. This bike isn't mine, but I'm trying to find a decent early Sportster to build a replica: ![]() I've given up in ever finding one of these:

Not mine, but I like the layout. Racer32, what brand/size front tire is that on your Bultaco? Dragon, are they the same as the one on your BSA pic?

I have a soft spot for early BSA Spitfire Hornet desert sleds....and have a very original complete '64 but no good pix yet, here's some off the net tho -
Factory brochure for very early SH ![]() Except for the incorrect TT pipes, this one is very nice. Not many of this early series left. ![]() . Last edited by Dragon; 07-02-2008 at 11:14 PM. |

Likewise, I covet the Triumph Bonneville TT Specials...factory no-lighting hotrods, most became desert sleds.
Here's a '65 ![]() A '66 ![]() And a '67 (someone added the taillamp and speedo) ![]() . |

Trackmaster Triumph. I built this for a customer almost 15 years ago. We have seen several imitations over the years. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Still a very cool bike, Don |

Have I posted any of these here yet?
These are from Brockton, MA this past October. I've got a ton of cool photos from the pits that will have to wait. They are at home & my computer there has suffered a meltdown. ![]() ![]() ![]()

That bike is amazing... I remember seeing that photo in a magazine (has it been 15 years?) I had it posted up on the wall in my cubicle. Timeless beauty man.

I just looked. It was on the cover of Old Bike Journal magazine October '97. It was shot 4-5 months before that and the bike was done almost a year before the bike, photographer (Jeff Hackett) the weather and myself could get in one place at the same time. So more like 12 years ago.
We did use the same shot in our catalog www.metroracing.com web site and some advertising over the years. Don |

This one is currently under resto. Hopefully to be done in time for Mid Ohio Vintage days, Triumph mark. It's Don Castro's Factory Red Line framed 750cc Triumph with the Tracy Fiberglass works body work that was banned by the AMA at San Jose 1/2 mile in 1972.
$$$$$$$ Reward for anyone getting me any color pix of this bike. I have a lot of black and whites, but will concider any Castro pic from '71-'72 Don |

Not vintage, but it's a great street-legal hybrid of both flat track and desert bike that would be ass loads of fun on the street and reasonably cheap to build. Imagine tear-assing around in a pack of these!

![]() This is a 500 that was racing in Perris a while ago. The owner Lenny said he built it for under $2500. Check out the K&N breathers on the rocker caps. ![]() This is Joe Pape's 53 KR...dual plug heads with dual mags, and no brakes. Fun. The Triumph is a 66 bonneville Jack Hatley built...currently owned by Yaniv at powerplant in LA. I rode all of these and it made me wanna build something...

It's a Honda XR650 (or 600?) desert bike with different forks, custom subframe, lowered rear shock or dog bones, tank, seat pan, etc. I don't think the actual frame was modified, but it's also not finished in this pic. I don't know much about it, but I know you can find the "L" for "Legal" models on CL once in a while for 2k or so depending on how hammered it is. Probably cheaper outside of CA. The design hasn't changed in a long time on these bikes and there is lots of aftermarket support on the mods so engine parts and tuning stuff is real easy to come by. They are known to be workhorse motors and routinely run 100mph plus in baja all day, so on the street... Can you tell I'm in love with it too?! I'm sure there are ADV riders on here who could tell you lots more about them.

yea, Doug. That is a Sam bass K2F magneto conversion on the unit cases. Kinda tricky and pretty rare. I have another set of cases back here that one day will be a chopper with a K2F or a Joe hunt.

As if by magic, after I this thread went quiet, I stumbled upon a link that took me to the coolest magazine dedicated to flat trackers- Sideburn. It even has a spread on Jay Springsteen. Anyone who was into this thread check the mag out
http://www.sideburnmagazine.com/WELCOME%20x.html I haven't even opened my copy of Dice yet cos I'm still reading Sideburn |

You need to resize the pix first.
Or, if you'll use Photobucket they have a resizing option built-in. See the last of the pic-posting thread on the Questions board. |

I think the name of the owner of the bike was Joe Buffardi, and it appeard in a swedish magazine called Gasoline. Red frame and just two pipes as fueltank. Think it was a '66.

That's a Bultaco Sherpa T. "T" as in TRIALS...The suspension and steering geometry of that bike are for going slow and climbing straight up, not sliding sideways on a flattrack at speed. BE CAREFUL!!!

I absolutely love the sleek lines of these tanks. I want one. What am I looking for? I've searched eBay under "flat track" "dirt track" "board track" "track" - and multiple variations all with no luck. Surely, it's just I'm not using the right name for this style of tank...
A little help?

This is my one BSA I found in guys basement that sat for 20 years. The tank was already on it. But with the Ceriani's, bobbed fender, stripped down, and bars I thought it gave a street tracker appeal kind of. Damn thing kicked over on its fifth kick after those 20 years. Sat in storage the last few years, but I pulled it a few weeks ago, put a lightning tank on it, rewired and am making a new seat and rearsets for it right now.

Here's my 1972 Bultaco Astro 360cc custom street tracker (soon it will have a late 60's vintage Mercurio tank painted with the later Astro dots-and-dashes scheme).

I found this last night in a box of old family photos. An uncle and his slightly customed 1966 Triumph 650 Bonneville TT Special. The picture was taken some time in 1967 when he was 19 or 20. Being his only transportation at the time, he commuted during the week and raced it on the weekends, sometimes drag racing it on alcohol. He still has the bike.

Saw your post on HAMB and thought I'd stop back here and see what the response was. I went to all the Ohio races in the mid to late 60's. A friend of mine was Ohio # 38F expert. I was sort of a crew chief for him. I visited your website and it brought back a lot of memories. Cool pics!

Very cool stuff Thunderplex,
Just last night I was at a friend's house digging through his huge collection of old magazines and race programs from Castle Rock, Sidewinders, and other tracks here in the NW. Thanks for making all those photos available. Good stuff.

Obviously you'd like to get lots of traffic to your site...
But what about just posting some pics here, we have several interesting flat track pic threads going: Flat Track Fun Old flat track pics! show me your flat trackers and desert racers . |

nice! They used to have flat track racing here in the early 80's. We would flat track race our three wheelers and the main attraction was the flat trackers at the end of the night. It was a small track and there were always lots of wrecks.

My boyhood hero was "Super Fred" Smith. He raced Yamahas and Triumphs for my Dad's shop, then got a factory ride with H-D in the early to mid 70's (national plate 42). I'd love to find any and all old pics.

Joe. Here's one of your old subjects (Jay Springsteen) on my wkr Big Horn Kawasaki. I have Woody Kyle's bike that Jay Ridgeway, Jeff Purvis and Ed Salley rode, here for a resto. I seen some small pix of Ridgeway on your site. Do you have any bigger, or more pix I could use to help with the resto.
The other pic is of Don Castro's factory Triumph that I just restored. Any other pix of Don on the Triumph would be cool too. Thanks,Don Miller www.metroracing.com ![]()

It's a slightly modified 1971 BSA/Triumph OIF chassis. And it looks real good.

The old Good Year DTII's/Dunlops handel just fine on the street. They just tend to wear a little quicker than a street tire. Get the harder compound "8's" and you'll be fine.

Absolutely the coolest flat tracker ever built. This bike was built by Ron Woods (not the guitarist in The Stones!) and various forms of it were ridden by Alex Jorgenson, Jody Nicholas, Rob Morrison and Dave Aldana. This was the last iteration ridden by Jorgeson. Note the notched front down tube/oil tank. I love this bike.

Hi, 66 triumph,
This is a mid sixties Sportster XLRTT racer, mag in front of engine, owned by a guy called Marsh. A bit special in that it's fitted with a rare set of 60's alloy factory heads based on the iron ones castings. Here's the guy with his other ride, a KRTT in the same lines: Patrick |

I figured I would post a pic of my 1965 TR6 SC (JoMo Desert Sled). Not quite stock- Ceriani forks, Akront 18"/21" rims, extended swingarm, etc. Needs a clutch and carb rebuild and minor reassembly and it should be a blast to ride. If anyone has any info on this bike, I would really appreciate sending it my way, thanks.

Hello, just new to this group and I would like to show you my xlrtt replica only legal to ride during daylight hours as it has no lights. It might be pretty lame compared to the real thing but a replica does the job when the genuine article is impossible to get hold of or to afford.......Davi.

Showed this one on best Trumpy customs but now that i see a flat track and desert racer thread, i guess it belongs here.
PS We are be building an AJS 650 CSR Desert racer! Pics on the way very soon. New street/flat tracker. I've been watching the progress on this machine from start to end and the last few weeks have been killing me with anticipation! Finally got to ride this little beast the other day and it handles as good as it looks. Another well done job by Matt J, Sydney Australia ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That's good looking beast, congrats. can you tell me, the rims, the rear hub, what make are they?? Also, that seat/tank set-up looks awsome. Did you have to modify the frame to make it fit? Those triumph frames are wide on the rear and this looks slimmer?? Good paint work too! Oil cooler rocks, the more i look the more i like!!!

This beautiful Gold Star scrambler has ben on ebay lately -
![]() From the text - "it belonged to/built by the famous Jim Hunter of Southern California. This bike was built up by Jim Hunter to race, for either Scrambles, Motocross, or Desert racing. I also have copies of the original BSA Factory build (dyno) sheet, that I obtained from the Gold Star Owner Club in England. This sheet VERIFIES the engine and frame numbers are correct for this bike, the cams, transmission, and the "trim" are all correct as it left the factory and it was dyno'd on June 24, 1955 and then dispatched to Hap Alzina on January 11, 1956. This is a 1955/6 BSA Gold Star Scrambles. This bike should almost be in a Museum, as it has all the history of Southern California off road racing as it's history. Jim Hunter won a LOT of races in his day, and he also built up some of the fastest Goldies that raced all over the U.S. Jim Hunter had a huge influence on motorcycle off road racing of all types, he was (is) well known and a true racer. He also had his own shop in La Habra, Ca., and was one of the "guys" in the book: The Original Wild Ones: Tales of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club." ![]() ![]() . |

Bossman's new addition to our collection here at the shop:
I've gotta get some shots of the frame, it's pretty trick.

1960 AJS 650cc CSR desert racer found by my brother last year. We just finished putting it together, not restored, looks as good as the day it was first modified.

Wow.....what a great pic, of a true pioneer & living legend...
Bio - http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/hall...page.asp?id=91 ![]() "At 15, Smith sold his scooter and bought a real dirt bike, a Matchless. One minor problem for Smith, who was small for his age, was that he couldn’t kick-start the big thumper. He would have to start at the top of an incline and coast downhill to start the bike." "Smith’s first taste of competition was at a local hare scrambles race in Riverside, California. He rode his 1953 Matchless to the race and figured that in order to race he would need to hold the throttle wide open. "We entered the first turn and I just stayed on the throttle and ended up knocking a bunch of people down. I can vividly recall seeing a chain right next to my face with the rear wheel going around. I got up from that crash and crashed about 13 more times and ended up second place. Going home I started thinking, ‘If I wasn’t laying on the ground so much I could have won that race.’ The next month I went back determined to ride my ability and I did win the race that time." " |

Oh yea, I was looking at the triumph and the blue bike there. The blue one looks to have some sort of AJS engine or somethng. but yea not flattrackers ay
Looked at a load of gamble autorace stuff on the web, quite interesting. I wasn't familliar with it. Looks like both the bikes there are vintage autorace bikes. I found this triumph jobby http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JNgH2kk8pu...ace_96c110.jpg quite interesting |

Some more info on the gamble racer photos above:
Pics from the track at Kawaguchi, on the outskirts of Tokyo. These guys make serious money, and the tuning skills have evolved accordingly. Meguro made an almost exact copy of the two-piece Triumph for use by the gamble racers. Mods included cams which could be switched without splitting the cases, a stronger crank which is adjustable for balancing! That is, heavy screws are threaded vertically into the flywheel, allowing the riders/tuners to adjust the amount of flywheel effect to suit track conditions. The riders also made their own carb needles on tiny lathes, tuned the engine's performance using different weight valve springs, etc. The single-cylinder blue bike is a Japanese-made Kyokuto, oil pump driven off the cam, total-loss oil system. Many of the early gamble racers were British bikes which were then copied and modified by Meguro. Later they used their own engines such as the HKS and, recently, the Suzuki. Those interested in the arcane world of the gamble racers might want to read, 'The Zen Masters of Motorcycle Racing.' http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2005/Jan/050111k.htm

Here's a few more pics of 'Fireman' (the name on the tank). The bikes run 2-speed gearboxes.

This was set up for flat tracking when it lived the US, I dont know if it ever raced or not. Its in a sorry state now, havent started it yet. It will probably end up as some kind desert sled/beach racer hack.

Buddy Elmore's Triumph in it's last permutation as a TT racer. This bike was 6th at Daytona in '65, the year before he won on a factory ride. Built by Jack Wilson when it was still Dahlio's in Dallas. Based on a 59 5T.

have we finally discovered what is believed to be, possibly, the oldest motard bike? it looks confused, and cool all at the same time. I kinda dig it...

That there looks like an old Speedway bike! Speedway is awesome!!!! If you haven't seen a Speedway race, you need to. The tracks here in the states are tiny compared to the ones in Europe. Bada$$!

Finished my -54 T110 build about two weeks ago. (Next: adding lights and a registration plate to make the bike "street legal". No, it's not me hiding behind the bike). Frame is a -54, engine's a later 650 (-58) with a 9-stud head.

That pre-unit pictured above is amazing! Nice bike, whether it gets raced or not.
I just found this old ACE (American Competition Engineering) Triumph body. You guys might have seen it over on Britbike, but I really would like to find out more about it. I was told it pre-dates the Tracy bodies by a few year. It's hard to see in this pic, but it has a built in oil tank, so it's pretty useful. Surprisingly, it looks great on a rigid framed Triumph. Anyone have any original ads or pics of bikes with one?

For sure! One of about five bikes I put in the "unforgettable" category, and as close to an American Bimota when it comes to engineering as your ever likely to see. The intake manifolds are longer than originally built by Wood as I remember though?

Southbay Speedway brings back memories. I used to go practice there on I forget something like Wednesday nights back in the early 70's. I got into speedway after purchasing a Weslake from Ken Maely and seperated my shoulder to many times. Anyways, thanks for the memories, still have my steel shoe and would love to get on a dirt track again. So far this season is going good with Joe Kopp winning on a Ducati and Stevie Bonsey winning at Calistoga. I sure hope flat track has a great season.
