Why do the Europeans know more of our history and build cooler bikes that us? Or all all those pics from "across the pond?"
On another note, where are all the old drag bikes? I figured I'd find some on E-bay for sale, but it's just newer stuff or Jap. Last edited by Richard D; 10-22-2007 at 02:50 PM. |

Friend of mine has one of the Barn Job motors. he says he got it on the curb of Johnson's house when he was THROWING IT AWAY. It is now built into a 1500cc fuel monster with hand made cylinders. He is gonna put it in a side car rig he owns. Seemed it was "used up" and so Clem was throwing it away. He said Clem was (is) a total perfectionist and did not use anything that was not perfect, once it got bad enough he just threw it out. Said he had (still has) the cleanest shop he had ever seen, like an operating room. By the way, Clem Johnson is still perfecting the Barn Job, making it go faster and faster. Seems it is so fast now that he is afraid no one could hold on to ride it.

If any one is interested ,
Disc 3 (Titled; The way it really was ,the L.A. drag race scene) of the Dreams of Legends dvd set has some killer footage of lots of pre unit triumph drag bikes and some HD's(one of the triumphs looks to be the one from the west coast choppers mini mag that came with a recent garage mag) and another is the #2 drag bike version of "lil Pam" the dry lakes triumph posted in machobucks early 60's question thread.Oh and some barn job footage too. Pic one from custom bike mag 6/78 -Gene Schille's vincent from the mid 60's ![]() And more of the Barn Job (coolest drag bike ever) ![]()

Sounds like it was!
"Russ Collins' three-motor monster eventually ran a best of 7.80 sec./179.5 mph but, in the end, proved a death-defying ride. In 1976, it was destroyed in a horrendous crash at Akron, Ohio that nearly killed Russ, put him in the hospital for several weeks and kept him in a wheelchair for several more. You can't keep a wild man down, though. " |

That triple Honda was called the "Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe."
That is one of Sonny Routt's double Trumpets.

John whose triumph is/was that, tell us the details, and whose is the dual engine one you are speaking of.Off the top of my head I can only recall the Dual engined trumpets of "pommy"Pete Allen, the one also campaigned/sponsered by Ryans of Parramatta, and Warren Afflick's (spl ??) ex Sonny Routt nitro burner. So fill in details ,thanks.

Spotted this in a little shop here. Stretched road going featherbed, twin come and gos, welded on rigid rear. No details. Must try and find out more.

Somebody asked where all the old dragsters have gone, a couple of years ago I was driving the Oregon coast and saw Stan Dishong's Antique Motorcycle Museum, Port Orford, Oregon. I went and called him it was by appointment only once a week I was lucky to raise him on the phone. He came over and showed me his modest collection 40 bikes.
He was like 72 and was retiring entire collection and shop. It included his early Harley dragster "The Hog" from just after the WWII. He raced at Lyons drag strip amongst others in So Cal. thru the 50's. I later read of his exploits as one of the first draggers. His collection was going to Europe or the Parnell's Motorcycle Museum in the midwest for a tidy sum finally calling it quits. Nice collection, was one of the first aftermarket guys with custom parts for draggers ? Sorry No pics Ross |
